The Buffalo Bills make their annual trek up the road to the Rogers Centre in Toronto for their first NFL preseason betting battle of the year. They’ll take on the defending AFC champions, the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night.
Once again, the preseason for the Colts started off as a tale of two portions in a 37-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. QB Peyton Manning led Indianapolis to the first ten points of the game… and after that, it was embarrassed. The 49ers ran up and down the field thanks to a miserable offense for the Colts led by both Curtis Painter and Tom Brandstater. Painter only went 9-for-19 for 64 yards with a whopping three INTs. Brandstater had a bit of a better time, going 8-for-12, but he only threw for 34 yards. The former Fresno State signal caller did account for the only other touchdown of the game for the Colts, but he was also picked off. In total, Indianapolis only put up 235 yards of offense. The defense obviously wasn’t very stellar either. Granted, the unit only allowed 335 yards for the game, which is a respectable number, but there is never an excuse to give up 37 points, particularly in the preseason. Indianapolis was outscored 20-0 in a horrifying second quarter, which included a pick six thrown by Painter.
The Bills didn’t exactly look stellar either in a Week 1 42-17 loss to the Washington Redskins. Buffalo jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a K Rian Lindell field goal, but from that point forward, it was essentially all over. The defense conceded five touchdowns, while the special teams conceded a TD of its own. The quarterback battle wasn’t nearly decided between Ryan Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards either. HC Chan Gailey is going to have his work cut out for him, especially if his signal callers are playing this poorly. Fitzpatrick went just 9-of-14 for 61 yards with a TD, while Edwards especially struggled, going 6-for-12 for 58 yards with an INT. Prospective third QB Brian Brohm missed the game and might not be playing this week either. Look for RB CJ Spiller to get more than the four carries he got in his first game. RB Marshawn Lynch is going to miss the majority of the preseason with an injured ankle, while Fred Jackson injured his hand in the defeat and will be out of this week’s action as well.
This game is a tough call, but we tend to believe that these defenses are finally going to show up and get something going. Neither offense is worth much, especially for Indianapolis once Manning leaves the game. The only choice we have is to back the ‘under’, as both teams will want to prove something defensively after poor showings in Week 1. Almost all of the offenses in the NFL put forth great efforts in Week 1 of the preseason. This won’t be a repeat performance, especially in Toronto.
