Josh McDaniels is out as head coach of the Broncos. John Fox is the new man at the helm of the Broncos. Fox will try to turn around a team that has really been going in the wrong direction the last couple years. The team was outscored 471 to 344 during the course of the 2010-2011 season. The offense showed promise at times, but it was inconsistent. The defense ranked last in the NFL in total yards allowed per game.
At the end of last season, Tim Tebow was named the starter for the last three games. All through the offseason, rumors were swirling that the Broncos were attempting to trade former starter Kyle Orton. It seemed the Broncos were ready to make way for Tebow to be the main man under center. The ultimate curveball was thrown this past week when the team announced that Orton would be the starter this season. The team says it is no longer trying to trade Orton, and they will move forward with him as their primary quarterback. What should be made of this move? Apparently the Broncos just think Tebow isn’t ready, or maybe deep down they wonder if he will ever be the player they hoped they were getting when they drafted him. At the same time, Orton has proved he isn’t capable of carrying an offense.
John Fox is a guy who likes to run the football first, but the Broncos are definitely short-handed in the backfield. The team tried to bring in DeAngelo Williams, but they couldn’t work out a deal. The team did grab Willis McGahee and they still have Knowshown Moreno. Fox will try to establish the running game this year, but it will likely be tough since Denver has one of the worst offensive lines in all of football.
The offense has plenty of questions, but the defense is even worse. The defensive line has some pass rushers, but there is absolutely no one who excels in stopping the run. The Broncos really needed to go out and get a top-notch defensive tackle, but they failed to do so. The linebackers should be the strength of the defense. D.J. Williams is a high quality player, and Von Miller should be a star in the NFL for quite some time. In the secondary, the Broncos are much older than any other unit in the NFL. Brian Dawkins, who is 38 years old, will be the starting safety. Dawkins has been a great player, but he has certainly lost a step or two. Champ Bailey is 33, and while he has been playing at a high level, he is bound to slow down before too long.
Denver Broncos 2011-2012 NFL Prediction: 4-12 (4th Place in AFC West)
I expect more of the same from the Denver Broncos this year. The defense will be one of the worst in the NFL, and the offense doesn’t have any real stars. I think Fox is a good coach, but there just aren’t enough pieces to make this team get anywhere near the playoffs right now. Don’t be surprised if the quarterback controversy in Denver continues all the way through the season.
