Starting Pitchers- Giants (Bumgarner) vs. Padres (Harang)
The Giants were only able to manage one win in their four-game opening series against the Dodgers. The Padres went to St. Louis and took two out of three. The Giants are the defending World Champions, but they do have plenty of question marks. The National League West is wide open once again this year.
Madison Bumgarner played a major role in the San Francisco Giants reaching the playoffs and then winning it all. The young left-hander showed that he can battle even when he doesn’t have his best stuff, and he is definitely mature beyond his years. He pitched very well in two outings against the Padres last year. The Giants have a question mark in the bullpen right now as Brian Wilson is injured. An even bigger question mark is their lineup. Can the Giants put up enough runs to get back to the playoffs? The team is counting on a bounce back year from Pablo Sandoval. Buster Posey is a terrific young hitter, but some fear he could have a sophomore slump. This team has one of the best starting rotations in baseball, but they’ll need to manufacture some runs.
The San Diego Padres went out and picked up Aaron Harang in the offseason. Harang is from the San Diego area, and they are hoping he can revitalize his career. Harang was the Cincinnati Reds ace for a few years, but he slipped back quite a bit in the last couple years. He has struggled with allowing the long ball too often, but the move to a much bigger park should help his numbers. The Padres have a fairly good starting rotation and a good bullpen. Just like the Giants, San Diego’s biggest worry is their limited offensive firepower. The middle of the order will badly miss Adrian Gonzalez. It is hard to imagine a lineup with Cantu, Ludwick, and Headley in the heart of the order doing a ton of damage. The Padres will need to play great defense and do the little things well this year.
The the Padres play in the most pitcher-friendly ballpark in the majors, so I expect a low scoring game here. I think the best play in this one is the under.
