Starting Pitchers- Reds (Volquez) vs. Cardinals (McClellan)
The Reds and the Cardinals have made it clear in the past that they don’t exactly like each other. These two are expected to contend for the National League Central once again this year, and right now they are tied atop the division with a 10-9 record. This will be the first meeting of the year between these rivals. Both games have circled this game, and we should see a great game on Friday night.
Don’t be surprised if most of the people in the visitor’s dugout are holding their breath in the bottom of the first inning on Friday night. Edinson Volquez has been downright awful in the first inning this year. Volquez has allowed back-to-back home runs to start the game twice already this year! How about this for an amazing statistic? Volquez has a 29.25 ERA in the first inning this year. In all the other innings Volquez has an ERA of 1.93. The Reds slumped on their recent homestand against the Pirates and the Diamondbacks. The team missed Brandon Phillips when he was out with an injury. Joey Votto won the NL MVP award last year, and he leads the National League in on-base percentage so far this year. Jonny Gomes leads the team with six home runs.
Kyle McClellan has been a pleasant surprise for the Cardinals so far this season. McClellan has only given up four earned runs in his first three starts. He will be tested by a solid Reds lineup in this one. Matt Holliday is healthy again, and he has been hitting the cover off the ball. Holliday 11 runs batted in even though he only has 44 at bats so far this year. Albert Pujols started the year slowly, but he now has six home runs after a recent power surge. With Pujols, Holliday, and Berkman in the middle of the order; the Cardinals should be able to pick up their offensive production this year.
It’s hard to predict how Edinson Volquez will pitch, but his wildness should be a problem against the Cardinals. I expect Volquez to walk too many people, and I think St. Louis will capitalize. The Cardinals are the best play here.
