QPR win promotion to the Premier League
Queens Park Rangers have won the Championship title and promotion to the English Premier League after a 2-0 win over Watford at Vicorage Road on Saturday.
Goals from Championship player of the year Abel Taarabt and ex-hornets attacker Tommy Smith gave Neil Warnock’s side the victory. The win lifts Rangers to an unassailable eight points lead at the top of the table, with two games left for the club’s challengers.
The London club have been the pacesetters in the league this season and have topped the table for the majority of the campaign.
The league win has been in the offing for a number of weeks but draws against Hull, Cardiff and Derby in the last three matches have delayed the confirmation of the Hoops promotion.
QPR were relegated from English football’s top flight back in 1995-96, and have toiled in the lower leagues since, so it will be a welcome return to the pinnacle of domestic competition for the club.
The club will benefit from the financial spoils of moving up the leagues, and will need to invest in new players in the summer to be able to compete.
Meanwhile, the second automatic promotion place will go to either Norwich or Cardiff, who both compete on Monday. The canaries are currently a point ahead of the Welsh side, with both club having two fixtures left.
