2011 Triple Crown Preview – Archarcharch
Up and down and all around. That’s been the story with Archarcharch for his entire career. He has run a ton of races by three year old standards nowadays, but he has had some awfully mixed results, including a few ugly ones. He’s a hot horse right now and just came off of a big time upset at the Arkansas Derby, so Archarcharch could be one to watchwatchwatch.
3-1-1, 6 Races
The combination of training William Fires and Jon Court are incredibly unknown around these parts at Churchill Downs, as neither one has ever even run a horse here. The two are relatives, as Court is the son in law of Fires. These are Arkansas born and bred horse racing fans, and it should come as no surprise that Archarcharch ran through the Arkansas circuit at Oaklawn Park.
In an ideal world, Court likely keeps Archarcharch just off the pace and will try to make a move with him at the wire. He really hasn’t shown excellent speed at any particular junction of the race, but we did see him make a major move at the end of the Arkansas Derby to take down a field that included Triple Crown contender, Nehro. He didn’t look particularly sharp in a third place finish at the Rebel Stakes either back in March, but Archarcharch was going against a field of colts that was pretty darn special that day, especially if The Factor ends up turning into anything down the line.
The one thing that we do notice right away with Archarcharch is that most recent test on the Churchill Downs track that he had. He just did a half mile in 0:52 flat on the slop on Tuesday, and if he can keep that type of a pace up in these conditions, which aren’t supposed to be ideal to say the least for the Run for the Roses, maybe this underdog has a chance.
Archarcharch was purchased for just $60,000 at one year old, and he has really been considered an underdog basically everywhere that he has gone. This horse might be the complete unknown, but with a favorable draw and a clean start, Court could be taking Archarcharch from a no name to the biggest name that the sport has to offer in just over two minutes.
