Yanks Hope to Hang on to First
The New York Yankees took back first place in the AL East Saturday with a win over the Colorado Rockies. Sunday the Yanks will try to hang on to their division lead when they and the Rocks get together for the rubber match of their three-game interleague series in the Bronx (2:05 pm Eastern, TBS).
New York cruised to an 8-3 victory Saturday behind eight solid innings from CC Sabathia. Which came as a relief to all those who backed the Yanks as -225 favorites. Saturday’s game also sneaked over the posted total of nine when the Rockies got a meaningless two-run homer by Ty Wigginton in the ninth inning.
Colorado won the opener of this series Friday night 4-2.
Colorado, meanwhile, at 38-38 overall and 3-2 on its current road trip, sits in third place in the NL West, 4.5 games back of the division-leading San Francisco Giants.
The Yankees are 24-18 at home this season, while the Rockies are 19-19 on the road.
New York is also now 8-3 since SS Derek Jeter went on the DL with a calf injury.
Juan Nicasio (2-1, 4.71) gets the start Sunday for Colorado against Ivan Nova (7-4, 4.13) for the Pinstripes.
Colorado has won four of Nicasio’s five starts this season, even though he’s only two-for-five in quality starts. In his most recent outing last Monday the rookie righthander gave up six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, but the Rocks beat Cleveland 8-7. On the year three of Nicasio’s five starts have played over the totals.
Nicasio has never started vs. the Yankees.
Nova is only seven-for-14 in quality starts this year, but he’s coming off his best outing so far, holding the Reds the one ER in eight innings, walking none and striking out seven, in a 5-3 New York victory Monday night. The Yankees are 9-5 in Nova’s starts this year, the totals 6-8.
Nova has never started vs. Colorado.
As of Sunday morning 5Dimes.com is listing the Yankees as -165 favorites for Sunday’s game, with an over/under of 10. The Rockies can be gotten at +150 at Sportsbook.com.
The totals are 39-34 in Rockies games this season, 34-35 in Yankees games, and 21-18 in games played at Yankee Stadium, which have averaged 9.4 RPG, seventh-most among all ML ballparks.
