Wimbledon Preview: Maria Sharapova vs. Dominika Cibulkova Picks

Wimbledon betting action continues with the quarterfinals for the ladies on Tuesday, and here at Bang the Book, we’re looking at all of the best tennis odds for the duel between Dominika Cibulkova and Maria Sharapova.

Cibulkova has had herself a few great runs here in Grand Slam events, but this is the first time that she has made it beyond the third round here at Wimbledon. The 22 year old really has had a great run here though in spite of the fact that she has had some fantastic challenges to reach this point. Right off the bat in her first match against Croatian, Mirjana Lucic, she had to fight three sets and all the way to 8-6 in the third set to get into the second round. She had an easy match against Polona Hercog in the second round, but had to fight to three sets in each of her third and fourth round battles as well. Julia Goerges was the woman who really should have taken out Cibulkova in the third round, but the Slovakian fought back and overcame a 1-6 defeat in the middle set to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The coup of all coups though came on Monday, as the top seed in the ladies’ bracket, Caroline Wozniacki was taken down in three tough sets, as Cibulkova made it here with a 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory.

What a day Monday was for Sharapova! Not only did the top seed in the bracket go away thanks to Cibulkova, but the Russian also became the favorite to win this event by a country mile when both Serena Williams and Venus Williams were eliminated. Now, Sharapova might not be the top seed let in this event, and she might not even have the easiest road to the finale, but she is certainly expected to be the winner from here on the Wimbledon odds. Of course, Sharapova was in this spot just a few weeks ago at the French Open when she was at this juncture, and she couldn’t make it through the semifinals in that event. The way that things have gone in women’s tennis of late, nothing would surprise us. Once again, to date in this tournament, Sharapova hasn’t dropped a set, including when she blew away Shuai Peng in the fourth round 6-4, 6-2 to make it to this point in this tournament.

Sharapova is the big time favorite in this match, and for good reason. Cibulkova has made some tremendous strides over the course of these last few years, but we’re just not so sure that she is going to be able to get over the hump at this juncture. This one should be a straight sets triumph for the Russian beauty. Go with Sharapova -330 to beat the Wimbledon betting lines.
