The Philadelphia Phillies continue their push towards the postseason when they take on the NL East division rival New York Mets on tonight in the first of a three-game weekend series at Citi Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. (ET) and the game will be available on MLB TV.
Philadelphia won four of its last six games heading into the All-Star break and has bolted out to a MLB-best 57-34 record overall and a 3.5 game lead over Atlanta in the division. The Phillies are 34-15 at home and 23-19 on the road.
Pitching has been the primary reason for Philadelphia’s success this season not only with its dominating starting rotation, but with a solid bullpen as well. It leads the Majors with a minuscule team ERA of 3.02. Run support has been a problem at times for the Phillies as they are currently ranked seventh in the NL in scoring with 384 runs.
Vance Worley, who has filled in admirably for the ailing Roy Oswalt, will be on the mound for Philadelphia tonight. He is 4-1 in eight starts this year and has an ERA of 2.20. He did get bounced around the last time these two met in New York; giving up five earned runs on 12 hits while lasting just three innings.
New York has remained competitive this season with an overall record of 46-45, but has fallen 11 games in back of the Phillies in the East. The Mets are 27-23 on the road this season, but have struggled at Citi Field with a record of 19-22.
The New York lineup has done a good job producing runs this season with an average of 4.38 a game, but are ranked ninth in the NL in pitching with a 3.95 team ERA. R.A. Dickey will get the start for the Mets in this one. He is 4-7 with an ERA of 3.61 in 18 previous starts. His last time out he gave up two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings against San Francisco. Dickey is 2-2 against Philadelphia with a 2.25 ERA.
These two have already met nine times this season with the Phillies holding a 6-3 edge overall and a 2-1 edge at Citi Field. The total is 5-2-2 in those nine games.
The favorite has won seven of nine so far and that trend should hold true for this game as the Phillies grab the early edge in this series with the win.
