MLB Picks & Preview – Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels
Los Angeles -135
The Texas Rangers put their 12-game winning streak on the line tonight in the second of a three-game series with AL West rival Los Angeles at Angels Stadium. Game time is set for 10:10 p.m. (ET) and it will be available on MLB TV.
Texas is currently riding the longest winning streak in the Majors since Boston won 12 straight in 2006. The streak has opened a five-game lead over LA in the division as the Rangers are now 56-41 on the year. They are 31-18 at home and 25-23 on the road.
While the lineup continues to add some solid run support, it has been the Rangers’ pitching that is grabbing all the headlines. This staff has given up a total of just two runs in its last seven games and has pitched five shutouts in the last nine. Left-hander Derek Holland will try and keep things going in tonight’s game. He is 8-4 on the year with a 4.32 ERA and responsible for two of those shutouts with 18 consecutive scoreless innings in his last two starts. Holland is 3-3 with a 5.06 ERA lifetime against the Angels.
Last night’s 7-0 loss to Texas as a 133 home favorite was LA’s third in a row and fifth in its last 10. The Angels are now 51-46 on the year, 25-23 on the road and 26-23 at home.
Pitching has been the Angels’ strong suit all season long with a 3.35 team ERA that is ranked third in the American League. They will send one of their best to the mound tonight as Dan Haren is slated to get the start. However, he is coming off one of his worst outings of the season after giving up four earned runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings in a loss to Oakland. Haren is 10-6 on the year with an ERA of just 2.75 in 20 previous starts. He is 4-6 in his career against Texas with a 3.40 ERA.
Head-to-head this season, the Rangers victory last night gave them a slight 4-3 edge overall but this was the first game played in Anaheim. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of the seven games.
This game has ‘under’ written all over it with two quality pitchers on the mound. Stick with Los Angeles to stop the Rangers’ streak as Haren returns to form and the Angels’ bats squeak out enough runs to get the win.
