MLB Preview – Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox
The Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox kick-off a three game weekend set tonight at US Cellular Field in a matchup of two currently embroiled in a heated division race. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast on the MLB Network.
Boston is coming off a four-game split with Kansas City after dropping a 4-3 decision to the Royals last night as a prohibitive 280 home favorite. It was just the Red Sox third loss in their last 10 games and they remain 2.5 games in front of New York in the AL East. They are now 64-39 overall, 33-19 at home and 31-20 on the road.
The power in this Boston lineup was never more evident after scoring a total of 25 runs in back-to-back victories over Kansas City this week. The Red Sox lead the Majors with a .281 team batting average and 570 runs scored.
It will be Tim Wakefield’s turn in the rotation for Boston. He has benefited from some excellent run support this season with 6-3 record, but an ERA of 5.15. The White Sox tagged Wakefield for four earned run and a loss the last time these two met and he is just 3-9 with a 5.29 ERA against them overall.
Chicago has gone 7-4 since the All-Star break and finds itself just three games in back of Detroit in the AL Central. Coming off a key 2-1 victory over the Tigers as 110 home favorite, the White Sox are now 51-52 overall. They have gone 28-26 on the road this year and 23-26 at home.
Pitching has been the key to this team’s change in fortunes as Chicago is now ranked fifth in the AL with a 3.66 team ERA. Tonight’s starter, Gavin Floyd has given up just one earned run in his last 15.1 innings and earned the decision in both starts. He is now 8-9 on the year with a 4.11 ERA. Lifetime against the Red Sox, Floyd is a perfect 5-0 with an ERA of 3.83.
Head-to-head this season, the White Sox went a perfect 3-0 on the road the first time they met with the total going ‘over’ in all three games. Stick with Boston to snap this streak tonight as a slight underdog in a game that once again goes ‘over’ the total.
