NCAA Football Preseason Rankings: #3 Oklahoma Sooners
Are you ready for some football? College football action is only about six weeks away. It appears the race for the BCS National Championship is wide open in 2011. I’m now up to my third ranked team in the country, the Oklahoma Sooners.
Oklahoma Sooners 2011-2012 College Football Preview and Predictions
Coach: Bob Stoops
2010 Record: 12-2 (Beat UConn in Fiesta Bowl)
Oklahoma Odds from 5Dimes
Oklahoma to win the BCS Championship: +450
Oklahoma to win Big 12 Conference Championship Game: -180
Bob Stoops helped his young team to an impressive 12-2 record last year. They have so much returning talent and they are currently pegged as the betting favorite to win the BCS Championship this season. The Big 12 Conference will look completely different this year, and the Sooners are clearly the class of the conference on paper. Can Oklahoma put together a memorable season?
Which teams on their schedule will be able to handle the duo of Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles? It may be the best quarterback and wide receiver combination in the country this year. Jones averaged 330 yards through the air as a sophomore, and I expect him to continue to progress this season. He has the arm to make all the difficult throws, and he continues to improve as a leader for this team. Broyles is one of the best returners in the country, but he is also a terrific play maker at wide receiver. Stoops and this offense would be wise to get the ball in his hands as much as possible this year.
The Sooners have a lot of strength right in the middle of the defense. Defensive tackles Stacy McGee and Casey Walker are terrific at clogging up the running lanes. The linebackers have quite a bit of freedom to roam because of the success the defensive line. Travis Lewis is a linebacker that could really make a name for himself in 2011.
Oklahoma struggled to run the football effectively in 2010, and that was when they had DeMarco Murray in the backfield. Murray was an extremely talented back, and the Sooners simply don’t have anyone to replace him this year. The passing attack will be great, but when Oklahoma plays against the best teams in the country they will need to have some balance on offense.
Oklahoma 2011 Football Schedule:
The Sooners will get a major test right out of the gates when they head to Tallahassee on September 17. The winner of that game will have the inside track to a BCS Championship berth. The season finale against Oklahoma State will likely be a very tough battle this year as well. Overall, the Big 12 Conference will be down a bit this year, but there are still a few dangerous teams on the schedule.
2011-2012 Oklahoma Football Predictions: 11-2 (Winner of Big 12 Championship, Loss in the BCS Championship Game)
Oklahoma is the favorite to win it all this year, but I think they’ll probably fall short. I really like this team, but the lack of balance on offense is very concerning. They might make it through the regular season unbeaten, but I think it is more likely they will pick up a loss and still reach the title game. I think Jones and this offense will put up big numbers, but without a consistent running game I think they’ll fall a little short of their primary goal of winning it all.
