NFL Preseason Pick: Bengals vs. Jets
NFL Betting Favorite: Jets -6 (-110)
In 2009, the Cincinnati Bengals hosted the New York Jets in the first round of the NFL playoffs. The Jets went on to beat the Bengals in that game, and the two teams have gone in opposite directions ever since. The Jets haven’t made it to the Super Bowl yet, but they are clearly one of the best teams in the AFC. On the other hand, the Bengals went 4-12 last year, and very little is expected out of them again this year. What can we expect in week two of the preseason when these teams meet?
The Bengals appear to be pinning their hopes on rookie quarterback Andy Dalton’s shoulders. Carson Palmer wants out of Cincinnati, and Mike Brown doesn’t want to trade him. For the time being, Carson Palmer is retired. Dalton was extremely successful at TCU in his collegiate years, but in a perfect world he would be learning behind a veteran quarterback for a year or two. Terrell Owens and Chad Ocho Cinco are both gone as well. A.J. Green is expected to be the new star wideout. Green had a minor leg injury in the week, but reports are that he will be ready to go. The Bengals are running Jay Gruden’s West Coast offense this year. Cincinnati’s defense will be expected to keep them in the game as the youngsters learn the new system. The Bengals have a strong group at linebacker, but they need to get better pressure on the quarterback from the front four. Last week’s 34-3 debacle at the hands of the Lions had to leave an ugly taste in this team’s mouth.
The New York Jets were beaten by the Houston Texas 20-16 last week. Rex Ryan made it clear that he wasn’t happy after last week’s loss. Mark Sanchez will likely start this game, but expect Greg McElroy to get most of the snaps under center. The Jets fumbled the ball three times last week, and they’ll need to clean up their play in this one. New York is deep at the tailback position, and we should see guys like Joe McKnight, Shonn Greene, and Bilal Powell all get plenty of carries this weekend. Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason were the big pickups on offense, and they will both probably be in action for a portion of this game. The Jets defense is the strength of the team. New York is extremely strong in the trenches on both sides of the football.
The defenses should be quite a bit ahead of the offenses in this one. The Bengals offense appeared hapless last week, and the Jets backup group isn’t that impressive.
