NCAA Football Pick: Washington vs. Nebraska Pick
Last season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Washington Huskies faced each other last year twice, and after splitting the first two games, they’ll duke it out in the rubber match in Lincoln on Saturday.
Unfortunately for Head Coach Steve Sarkisian, this clearly isn’t the same Washington team that was led by QB Jake Locker last season. Now, there are a lot of problems for this team as it heads into Pac-12 play. The offense has played well in two games against a solid FCS team in the Eastern Washington Eagles and the Hawaii Warriors. However, we can’t really get all that excited, because it is clear that neither of these teams can play defense like the Huskers can. Still, RB Chris Polk is well on his way to having another fantastic season. He had over 1,100 yards over the last two years, but he has had a problem finding the end zone, scoring just 14 times. He already has 45 carries for 232 yards, but once again, just one TD to show for his work. Still, looking back at it, dating back to last year, Washington has won six straight games and has covered five out of six games on the college football odds, and if this keeps up, perhaps U-Dub really is going in the right direction even though things don’t quite look so great on paper.
QB Taylor Martinez really came out of his shell last year in this game in the Apple State, as he threw for 150 yards and a TD and ran for 137 yards and three scores. Of course, in that game, both RB Roy Helu and RB Rex Burkhead rumbled for over 100 yards and found the end zone a combined three TDs as well. We know that it was night and day from that first game and the bowl game last year, and Head Coach Bo Pelini is hoping for the team that was around in the first game than the last game. Martinez hasn’t quite evolved as a passer yet. Against the Chattanooga Mocs and the Fresno State Bulldogs, two teams that don’t have defenses that are anything worthwhile, Martinez has only completed 48.8 percent of his passes, and he has just one TD against two picks. Of course, he has made up for it on the ground, but at some point, unless this team really goes back to the good old days of the triple option offense, Martinez is going to need to figure out how to throw the ball.
Washington Huskies @ Nebraska Cornhuskers Pick: The ‘over’ has cashed in six of its last eight games outside of conference play, though one of those ‘under’ clashes came in the bowl game between these two last year. Don’t be surprised if this one though, sneaks past the number, as these defenses have really struggled this year, and both could be in for a long one on Saturday.
