NCAA Football Betting Previews- No.13 Clemson Tigers at N.11 Virginia Tech Hokies

Point spread: Virginia Tech -6.5

Over/Under: OFF

The Clemson Tigers, out of the ACC’s Atlantic Division, square-off against the Virginia Tech Hokies, from the ACC Coastal Division, this upcoming Saturday in what might very well be a preview of this year’s conference title game. The kick-off from Lane Stadium in Blacksburg is slated for 6 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.

Clemson has its sights set on knocking-off its third straight ranked opponent after beating then-No. 21 Auburn 38-24 as a 3.5-point home favorite two weeks ago, followed by a 35-30 victory over then-No.11 Florida State as a 2.5-point home favorite. The total went ‘over’ in both of these games. The wins moved the Tigers to 4-0 straight-up on the year and 3-1 against the spread.

This offense features an attack that is very well balanced between the pass and the run. Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd has completed 65.8 percent of his throws for 1,255 yards and 13 touchdowns, while running back Andre Ellington has 371 yards rushing on 77 carries and three TD’s. The Tigers are averaging 315.5 yards a game passing the ball, while rushing for an average of 190.3 yards a game.

Virginia Tech is coming off its fourth straight non-conference victory after beating Marshall 30-10 as a 20.5-point road favorite. It is now a perfect 4-0 SU on the season, but just 1-3 ATS. The total has stayed ‘under’ in three of its four games.

The Hokies have also been able to move the ball effectively through the air and on the ground, but have a more potent rushing attack led by running back David Wilson, who has gained 519 yards on 88 carries for an average of 5.9 yards per attempt. As a team, they are averaging 211.8 rushing yards a game.

Clemson is 5-3 ATS in its last eight games overall and 3-2 ATS in its last five road games. The total has gone ‘over’ in its last five games overall, but has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last eight games in the ACC.

Virginia Tech is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall but 3-1 ATS in its last four games at home. The total has stayed ‘under’ in nine of its last 11 games.

These two teams have not played one another since 2007, but the Hokies have won the last five games both SU and ATS. The Tigers come into this game with a ton of momentum against an untested Virginia Tech team and use it to its fullest extent to continue their climb up the rankings.
