NFL Week 5 Betting Previews- New York Jets vs. New England Patriots
Point spread: New England -9.5
Over/Under: 49.5
The New York Jets head to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough this Sunday afternoon to square-off against the New England Patriots in an early AFC East showdown. The kick-off in this one is slated for 4:15 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
There is trouble brewing in Rex Ryan’s locker room as his New York Jets are starting to come undone at the seams. First, they blew a 10-point lead against Oakland in 34-24 loss as three-point road favorites two weeks ago. Last Sunday night, they looked horrible in a 34-17 loss to Baltimore as five-point road underdogs. The total went ‘over’ in both of these games.
The problems with the Jets are across the board as their offense is ranked 25th overall and 30th in rushing yards per game. Ryan’s vaunted defense is still ranked eighth in total yards allowed, but it is ranked 27th against the run and 15th in points allowed.
New England bounced back from its fourth quarter collapse in a shocking 34-31 loss to Buffalo as a seven-point road favorite in Week 3 with a solid 31-19 thrashing of Oakland this past Sunday as a six-point road favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of its four games this season.
The Patriots still live and die with the play of Tom Brady. He has cooled off a bit after a blistering start, but has thrown for a total of 1,553 yards and 13 touchdowns in just four games. Wes Welker remains his favorite target with 40 receptions for 616 yards and five TD’s. Defense has also been an issue for this team as it is ranked 20th in points allowed and dead-last in total yards allowed.
The Jets are 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games against the AFC East, but just 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of their last seven games in the division.
The Patriots are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against the AFC East and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in their last four games against divisional opponents.
Head-to-head, New York has won four of the last six games straight-up and is 4-2 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in the last three meetings. Despite the Jets recent form, 9.5 points is a huge spread given the intensity of this rivalry. New York may not be able to come away with a win, but it keeps things close enough to cover.
