NCAA Football Betting Previews – No. 20 Auburn Tigers vs. No.1 LSU Tigers
Point Spread: LSU -22
It will be an all-Tigers affair this upcoming Saturday afternoon when the Auburn Tigers travel to Baton Rouge to tangle with the undefeated LSU Tigers in this SEC-West Division clash. The kick-off is slated for 3:30 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
While Auburn will most likely not get a chance to defend last season’s national title, its 5-2 straight-up record (3-4 against the spread) has been a surprisingly strong start for a team that lost a good portion of the players responsible for last year’s magical run to the top of the college football world.
The Tigers have already knocked-off Mississippi State, South Carolina and Florida to run their conference record to 3-1 SU. The only setback was a 38-14 loss to Arkansas as 10-point road underdogs. They come into this game averaging 197 yards a game on the ground, which is currently ranked 27th in the nation.
LSU has been basically unstoppable in its run to a 7-0 SU start (5-2 ATS) and the top spot in the BCS rankings. Along the way, the Tigers’ offense has averaged 38.4 points a game, while their defense has given-up an average of just 11.7 points a game. They have already beaten four ranked opponents and are coming off a 38-7 romp over Tennessee this past Saturday as 16.6-point road favorites. The total has gone 3-3-1 in their seven games this season.
These Tigers have also gotten it done on the ground with an average of 194.4 yards per game, so it will be a battle in the trenches between these two conference foes. Spencer Ware has done most of the damage with 512 yards rushing on 128 carries, but Michael Ford has been a productive change-of-pace back with 359 yards of his own. Both backs have rushed for six touchdowns this season.
Auburn is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games as an underdog and the total has stayed ‘under’ in 21 of its last 30 games as a road underdog.
LSU is 4-1 ATS in its last five games following s SU win, and the total has stayed ‘under’ in three of its last five conference games.
Head-to-head in this series, the favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the home team is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the last meetings in Baton Rouge and in nine of the last 11 games overall.
While LSU will not lose this game, especially at home, it could get caught looking ahead to a huge Nov. 5 showdown with Alabama just enough to keep this game closer than the 22-point spread.
The Pick: LSU 37 Auburn 17
