NFL Week 8 Betting Review

NFL over/unders continued to trend back toward the .500 mark last weekend, as adjustments by both the teams on the fields and the linesmakers behind the counters take effect.

For the third week in a row the totals leaned toward the “unders,” this week by a 9-4 margin, as week 8 games averaged 42 points per. Five teams hit the 30-point mark, but five teams were also held to 10 points or less. So on the season the NFL over/unders are now 60-54, as games have averaged just under 45 points per.

Home underdogs had another winning weekend in week 9, going 3-2 both straight-up and against the pointspreads. The St. Louis Rams pulled off the biggest surprise of the weekend, thoroughly outplaying the New Orleans Saints and winning 31-21 as 14-point home dogs. Elsewhere the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the New England Patriots while getting 3.5 points at home, and the Kansas City Chiefs knocked off the San Diego Chargers Monday night in overtime while getting three points.

So that’s five out of eight weeks this season home underdogs have made money for their financial backers. On the year NFL home dogs are now 18-25 SU and 23-18 (excluding pushes) ATS.

For week nine 5Dimes.com is listing two teams as home dogs. The winless Indianapolis Colts are getting eight points from the visiting Atlanta Falcons; and the Washington Redskins, fresh off getting shut out by the Buffalo Bills, are getting three points from the visiting San Francisco 49ers.

Double-digit favorites had a rough weekend, moneywise, and one of them, the Saints, got beat outright. On the weekend double-digit faves went 3-1 straight-up but 0-3-1 against the spreads. The Houston Texans pushed as 10-point favorites over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Giants had to rally to beat the Miami Dolphins as 10-point chalk, and the Baltimore Ravens had to do the same, after trailing the Arizona Cardinals by 21 points, as 12-point faves.

So on the season teams favored by 10 points or more are now 14-3 SU but just 5-11-1 ATS.

For this week 5Dimes is listing three more teams as double-digit favorites. Houston is favored by 12 points at home over Cleveland; the Dallas Cowboys are giving the Seattle Seahawks 13 points; and New England is chalked at -10 over the G-Men.

Home teams went 9-3 SU in week 9, excluding the game that was played in Toronto, and 6-5-1 ATS. On the season NFL home teams are now 71-43 SU and 59-50 ATS.

And the favorites and the dogs split their action last weekend, each covering six pointspreads, pushing one. For the year favorites own a slight 57-54 ATS advantage over the dogs.
