NCAA Football Pick: Miami (OH) vs. Temple Pick
The Redhawks might only be a 4-5 team this year, but they still control their own destiny in the MAC East if they can win out. Any loss along the way will likely be debilitating, though losing this game isn’t the end of the world with wins over the Western Michigan Broncos and Ohio Bobcats in the final two games of the year, as long as Temple loses its final MAC game. Miami really hasn’t continued the turnaround that it had last season when it went from the gutter of the conference to a legit contender in a span of just one season, but it hasn’t been a total step backwards either. QB Zac Dysert continues to put up respectable numbers, as he has thrown for 2,364 yards with 16 TDs against eight picks on the campaign. Watch for WR Nick Harwell in this one. He has 54 receptions for 895 yards and three touchdowns, and he likely will become the first and only 1,000 yard receive on the team in this one with a solid outing. The question is where the rushing yards are going to come from. This team is rated dead last in America in rushing at just a shade over 70 yards per game, and the only man with more than 101 yards on the ground is RB Erik Finklea, who has 328 yards and four TDs on 92 carries.
Last year, the Owls went 8-4 and ended up getting left out of a bowl game. Then their head coach flew the nest, as Al Golden went to coach the Miami Hurricanes, and he was replaced by Steve Adazio, a former assistant with the Florida Gators. Unlike the Redhawks, the Owls don’t control their own destiny for a spot in the MAC Championship Game, needing at least one, and likely two losses by the Bobcats to make it to the league’s top game, but this year, eight wins might be enough to snare the third bowl bid in the MAC regardless. You know exactly what you’re getting with Temple. The Owls are going to run the ball, run it hard, and run it some more. They rank No. 8 in the land at 258.3 rushing yards per game, and the fact that the clock is seemingly always running is why the defense ranks in the Top 10 in the country in virtually every major category, most notable in points per game at just 12.8. RB Bernard Pierce has 1,035 rushing yards and 19 TDs this year to lead the team, but it’s not inconceivable to think that RB Matt Brown could reach the 1,000 yard barrier as well by season’s end.
Miami (OH) Redhawks @ Temple Owls Pick: Temple is likely to win this game, but it isn’t necessarily going to win it going away. If Dysert can figure out how to put two or three touchdowns on the board, it’s likely going to be enough to stick in front of this type of a number.
