NCAA Basketball Pick: Tennessee vs. Charleston Pick
It has been a frustrating start to the season on the college basketball odds for the Tennessee Volunteers. They’ll look to avoid further problems on the road on Wednesday night when they take on the Charleston Cougars.
The Volunteers have been on a terrible slump of late, losing three straight games. In two of the three, the team was favored, and in the home game against the Austin Peay Governors, they were knocked off as 12 point favorites. Head Coach Cuonzo Martin has certainly not gotten off to a good start in Rocky Top, and another loss like this one would put the team in bad, bad shape going into the SEC season. The good news is that this will probably be the last challenging game that the team has to face until after the new year, but then again, Austin Peay shouldn’t have had a shot of knocking off UT either. This defense is alarmingly allowing 73.1 points per game, and teams are shooting 45.0 percent against it. The only good news is that the team is scoring 79.2 points per game, proof that the squad is going to be willing to run up and down the floor, but we have to remember that this hasn’t been as tough of a schedule as it appears. The loss to the Memphis Tigers doesn’t look as good as it once did, and the fact of the matter is that the only two defeats that this team will live to tell about at season’s end are ones against the Panthers and the Duke Blue Devils.
The College of Charleston has pulled off upsets like this one before, even right here on this court. It was only a few years ago in which the North Carolina Tar Heels came to visit the Cougars and went away with a stunning defeat. The Cougs aren’t afraid of any team in America, and they are willing to take on any challengers. This year, the team is 7-1, but the truth of the matter is that its only relatively solid showing came against the Clemson Tigers on the road. The good news though, is that the team has been running lesser foes off the court, crushing teams like Holy Cross, Morehead State, UMass and the Citadel. Watch out for Antwaine Wiggins on Wednesday. He hasn’t quite gotten his three point stroke going this year, but he is still averaging 17.4 points per game. When he gets going from long range (and he has to, considering the fact that he is averaging over six attempts from beyond the arc per game), this could become a regular 20+ point scorer.
Tennessee Volunteers @ Charleston Cougars Keys To The Game: Tennessee has to find a way to slow this game down just a bit. Trying to run Charleston off of the court in its own backyard isn’t going to happen, and the Cougs have the sharpshooters to make Tennessee pay for bad offensive possessions in a hurry in transition. The Vols have to be quite careful, as they could be the subject of a big time upset once again.
