NCAA Men’s Basketball Betting Guide- February 13
The 2011/2012 men’s college basketball season enters the second half of February with the top teams in the country jockeying for position in this year’s NCAA Tournament, while the rest of the teams in Division I continue to jockey for position in their respective conference. There are a number of teams with impressive records on the court, but we are looking for the ones that have risen to the top of the class for their ability to cover the spread.
This guide will single-out a few of those teams that have proven to be the best money-makers this season for anyone who enjoys wagering on the games.
The top dog for this week’s list is the Big Ten’s No.12 Michigan State Spartans. Their impressive 58-48 victory over No.3 Ohio State this past Saturday as an 8.5-point road underdog raised their record on the year to 20-5 straight-up and a highly profitable 15-7 ATS. The Spartans are 5-1 both SU and ATS in their last six games and atop the conference standings at 9-3 SU. Michigan State is 9-3 ATS at home this season and 5-3 ATS on the road. The total has gone 10-11-1 overall, but has stayed ‘under’ in five of the eight games on the road.
Turning to the Mid-Majors, the top team in the country ATS is the Manhattan Jaspers, out of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Saturday’s 85-63 romp over St. Peter’s as 8.5-point road favorites raised their record to 18-9 SU and 18-7 ATS. The Jaspers are only 5-4 ATS at home this season, but a healthy 11-3 ATS on the road. They are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall and the total has gone ‘over’ in four of their last six games.
Another Mid-Major that has provided a very profitable return this season is the New Mexico Lobos, from the Mountain West Conference. They extended their current winning streak to five games both SU and ATS with a 48-38 victory over Wyoming as 9.5-point home favorites this past Saturday. The Lobos are now 20-4 SU on the year and 15-6 ATS. They are 7-3 ATS at home and 8-3 ATS on the road. The total has gone an even 10-10-1 overall, but it has stayed ‘under’ in five of New Mexico’s last six games.
The second-ranked team in the country and top team in the Big East has also been one of the better teams this season ATS. The Syracuse Orange are 25-1 SU overall and 16-9 ATS. They are coming off an 85-67 beatdown of the defending champion Connecticut Huskies this past Saturday as 10-point home favorites. Syracuse is 9-7 ATS in 16 home games and 7-2 ATS in nine games on the road. The total has gone 11-13-1 overall, but has stayed ‘under’ in six of its last eight games.
A few other teams that have been able to compile impressive records both SU and ATS include the South Dakota State Jackrabbits out of the Summit League at 20-7 SU and 13-5-1 ATS, the Atlantic 10’s Saint Joseph’s Hawks at 16-10 SU and 15-7 ATS, the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders from the Sun Belt Conference at 23-4 SU and 16-9 ATS, and the Western Athletic Conference’s Nevada Wolf Pack at 21-4 SU and 14-7 ATS.
A few teams at the bottom of the list include the ACC’s Virginia Tech Hokies at 14-11 SU but 6-14-1 ATS, Butler Bulldogs from the Horizon League at 15-12 SU but 7-15-2 ATS, and the Big 12’s Texas Longhorns at 16-9 SU but 7-12-1 ATS.
