NCAA Basketball Pick: Davidson vs. Western Carolina Southern Conference Final Preview
Davidson has done some special things in the past, most notably with its run to the Elite Eight not all that many years ago. This is the best edition of the team since that point, and though it isn’t a team that has a sharpshooter like Stephen Curry to rely on, it is definitely a squad that can do some damage. Since losing to the Wichita State Shockers in BracketBusters, the Wildcats have absolutely destroyed three straight opponents, including the Furman Paladins in the SoCon Tournament, and there is no doubt that this should pave the way to a spot on the dance floor this year. An offense which is averaging 77.8 points per game this year is led by De’Mon Brooks, who is good for 15.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He is one of the five that average in double digits for this team, though. Davidson isn’t particularly deep, but when you have five men that can all go off for 20+ points in any given game, you are going to be a team to be reckoned with, especially in a suspect conference like the SoCon.
Every year, there seems to be at least one team that comes out of nowhere to get into the NCAA Tournament, and Western Carolina very well could be that team this year. The squad definitely played in the inferior side of the SoCon this year, as if it loses this game, there wouldn’t have been a team in the North that finished the year with a winning record. Still, a victory over the Wofford Terriers in this tournament was a bit shocking, especially considering the fact that it came by 23 points. Now, with a win over the UNC Greensboro Spartans, the top seed from the North, it became clear that the Catamounts were all of a sudden a force to be reckoned with. They have won seven straight games and have gone 6-1 ATS in those seven outings, and though not many of those wins came against the SoCon elite, the winning ways have be bringing about confidence. Western Carolina has scored 82 points in its last two games in this tournament, raising its scoring average up to 70.9 points per game on the campaign.
The Final Word: Davidson is a team that is good enough to win a game in the dance if given the chance, but this Western Carolina outfit is a lot better than its 17-17 record suggests. Though we don’t think that the Wildcats are going to punt the chance to go dancing, we do think that it could be a heck of a lot closer than the college basketball odds are going to suggest.
