Give the Devils all of the credit in the world for getting the job done in both of the games played in this series at the Prudential Center. Jersey has been remarkable offensively, putting up at least three goals in all four games in this series, and as long as that keeps up, the job for the aging Martin Brodeur is going to be an easy one. Ilya Kovalchuk continues to be a star in this series, but in the end, there have been a ton of different players that have figured out how to find pay dirt when push comes to shove. Thus far in the 11-game postseason, Kovalchuk and Travis Zajac both have 10 points. Zajac leads the team with five goals, while Kovalchuk and Zach Parise both have four strikes. Parise does have two goals and two assists in this series, but he has felt like he has been a tad quiet, especially in the Game 4 4-2 victory when he failed to get on the stat sheet.
The time is here for the Flyers to put up or shut up. They need to win three straight games to keep their season alive, and if they fail to do so, there are going to be a lot of questions asked of Head Coach Peter Laviolette and net minder, Ilya Bryzgalov. We have spoken a lot about the struggles of Bryzgalov in net over the course of the entire playoffs, and the stats just don’t lie; he has been a train wreck to say the least. That being said though, Laviolette is the man that is going to have a lot of heat on him as well in the near future. The Flyers were swept out of the second round of the playoffs last year, and now that they have reached this juncture again, they have looked just as bad in this series against a hated rival. The offense has been befuddled for a long period of time for the first time in the playoffs, and as we predicted, when the offense started to fall apart just a bit and stop playing relatively flawless games, the defense and the goaltending has been exposed in a big time way.
New Jersey Devils @ Philadelphia Flyers Pick: We just don’t see how the Flyers are going to be fighting back at this point. They have been outmatched by a team that, quite frankly might be a lot better than they are. In the end, go with the Devils at insane plus odds in this do-or-die game, and bid farewell to Philadelphia.
