This isn’t the first time that the Caps have been in a Game 7 this year. They were able to go on the road and beat the Boston Bruins at the TD Garden in one of the more impressive displays that we have seen here in the postseason. Braden Holtby, a young 22-year old net minder, has certainly showed that he is mature beyond his years, and he is leading this team with gusto. He stopped all but one shot that he faced in Game 6 at home to force this Game 7 situation, and you can bet that he will be amped up for the challenge of going on the road and taking a second game here at Madison Square Garden. Washington hasn’t had a great history here in Game 7s, going just 3-7 in its first 10 tries in the do-or-die games in franchise history. That being said, the Capitals do have a win over the Rangers in a Game 7 from three years ago, and they are already 1-0 in this situation this year, so there is going to be no fear whatsoever coming from the visitors in a game in which they really have very little to lose. Even if they lose 10-0, they still had themselves one heck of a run that few saw coming here in the postseason.
This is the second time that the Rangers have had the pressure of facing a do-or-die Game 7 as well. They were actually behind 3-2 against the Ottawa Senators before winning the last two games of that series, and they are now facing the same type of pressure right now against the Caps. New York isn’t going to want to go out here to a clearly inferior team, as there just was a ton of promise for this team for this series. The truth of the matter is that there is a good chance that the Rangers will have to play the No. 6, 7, and 8 seeds in the East and the No. 8 seed in the West to win the Stanley Cup, and if that were the case, it would look like the easiest road that a team has ever had to win it all. This is the game that was made for Henrik Lundqvist. He has been huge in the biggest games that this franchise has had over the course of the last half dozen years or so, and without the guaranteed help from the offense, he is going to be the man that has to really shut the door on the Caps to guarantee a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Washington Capitals @ New York Rangers Pick: Washington got the best of the Rangers when these teams met three years ago in this situation, but at the time, the Caps had the significantly better team and the more experienced goalie. Now, the roles are reversed, and we expect to see the end result reversed as well. The Capitals have had a great run, but it is going to come to an end at the Garden on Saturday night.
