Johan Santana and Mark Buerhle both turned in solid performances last night, but the Mets and Marlins bullpens took turn blowing leads as the Marlins won 6-5. After a slow start Miami has now won 9 of their last 10 games. The Mets weren’t expected to do much this year, but they are 18-14 so far on the season. FOX will have coverage of this Saturday afternoon game.
The Mets have the fifth best batting average in the majors, but they are averaging only 4.16 runs per game. New York has hit only 22 home runs as a team this year, and they are struggling to knock runners with little ball. Still, the Mets have managed to pull out a bunch of close games this season. David Wright leads the team with a terrific .387 batting average. He has an on-base-percentage of .480. Ike Davis is the main guy that the team really needs to get going in the middle of the order. Davis has shown he is capable, but he is struggling in a big way right now.
R.A. Dickey has been great for the Mets the last couple years and he is off to another solid start. Dickey is 4-1 with a 3.76 ERA this year. He has been lights out at home, but he has struggled on the road. Dickey has a 6.23 ERA in three starts on the road.
Ricky Nolasco is currently tied with Dontrelle Willis for the most wins in Marlins team history. Nolasco would certainly love to pick up his franchise record-setting win at home, and he has been pitching very well this year. Nolasco is 4-0 with a 2.72 ERA in six starts this season. The Marlins lead the majors with 25 quality starts already in 2012.
Omar Infante isn’t thought of as a great hitter, but he leads the team with a .330 average and six homers. Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez are hitting .234 and .213 respectively, so it is pretty amazing that the Marlins are above .500 right now. Ozzie Guillen likes to get his team moving on the bases, and he has the perfect team for that this year. The Marlins lead the league with 37 stolen bases. Emilio Bonifacio has 17 stolen bases this year and has yet to be thrown out! If this team can get its stars hot, they will be dangerous.
Betting Trends
The Mets are 7-0 in their last 7 Saturday games. They are also 6-1 in their last 7 against a right-handed pitcher. New York is 5-0 in Dickey’s last 5 starts against the Marlins.
The Marlins are 4-0 in Nolasco’s last 4 home starts. They are just 9-24 in their last 33 home games when playing a team with a winning record.
The over is 9-2 in Nolasco’s last 11 starts against the Mets. The under is 8-2 in Dickey’s last 10 starts overall.
MLB Free Pick: Under 7.5
Both pitchers are pitching extremely well right now. Look for this one to stay low scoring.
