New York avoided a three-game sweep to the suddenly hot Los Angeles Angels this week with a 6-5 victory on Wednesday as a 101 road underdog. The win was just the Yankees fifth in their last 10 games but it left them one game behind Tampa Bay and Baltimore in the AL East. They are now 27-23 overall and an even 12-12 on the road. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of their last seven games.

Yankees’ ace CC Sabathia is scheduled to get the start on Friday. The left-hander gave-up just two runs in seven innings in his last outing against the Athletics to get the win. He is now 6-2 on the year with a 3.66 ERA. Lifetime against the Tigers, Sabathia is 16-12 with an ERA of 4.46.

Detroit will be finishing up a four-game set against Boston this Thursday in hopes of avoiding a sweep to the resurgent Red Sox. It has now lost six of its last nine games after getting swept in three by Cleveland last week before bouncing back with a three-game sweep of Minnesota this past weekend.

This roller-coaster ride has left the Tigers 23-27 on the year and 5.5 games in back of the Indians in the AL Central. The slide against Boston has dropped them to 12-15 on the road and they will head home for this series were they are 11-12.

The Tigers are ranked fourth in the AL in hitting with a team batting average of .262 but this has not always translated to runs as they are ranked ninth in the league in scoring. Detroit may need to generate some runs in this game with Casey Crosby making his first ever MLB start. The hard throwing left-hander has compiled a 23-14 record in the minors including a 4-2 start this season. He is replacing an injured Doug Fister in the starting rotation.

New York has an overwhelming advantage on the mound and will also benefit from an extra day’s rest. The Yankees have struggled in Detroit recently with just one win in their last five games at Comerica Park, but stick with them to get the early edge this time around with the win.
