The Reds took the first game of this series, but Justin Verlander led his team to a 3-2 victory in Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon. This will be the rubber game of this interesting Interleague matchup. These two teams haven’t seen each other since 2006. Both teams have lots of potential, but the Reds are in a better place than the Tigers right now. ESPN Sunday Night Baseball will feature this game.
Detroit was expected to run away with the American League Central, but the team sits five games below .500 in the middle of June. Justin Verlander is the best pitcher in baseball right now, but the rest of the pitching staff hasn’t been good at all. The Tigers team ERA is an unimpressive 4.22. The team’s defense isn’t any good either, as they have already committed 40 errors this year. Rookie Drew Smyly is 2-2 with a 3.71 ERA so far this year. He has been the Tigers second best starting pitcher in 2012.
Prince Fielder was a huge acquisition and he has been very good, but the Tigers lineup as a whole has been a disappointment. Fielder and Miguel Cabrera are both hitting .317, but many of the other lineup mainstays are struggling. Brennan Boesch, Delmon Young, and Jhonny Peralta have all disappointed this season. Detroit is hitting .263 as a team, but they haven’t been able to come up with clutch hits with runners in scoring position.
Cincinnati started the season a little slowly, but the Reds have played good baseball over the past month. Joey Votto got a long-term extension before the season, and he is hitting the ball as well as anyone in baseball right now. Votto is hitting .362 with 10 home runs and 38 RBI’s. He has a .484 on-base-percentage. Brandon Phillips was injured through the first month of the year, but he is hitting over .300 in the last month. The Reds offense has been much better since Phillips has been in the lineup and producing consistently. Cincinnati’s weakness is at the leadoff spot, where they can’t seem to find anyone who fits the role well.
The Reds pitching staff has a done a very nice job so far this year. Cincinnati’s bullpen has the best ERA of any bullpen in the majors. Aroldis Chapman has locked down the closer spot, and the Reds have far more middle relief depth than most people realize. Homer Bailey is still a bit of an enigma at the starting pitching spot. Bailey has had quite a few very nice starts this year, but he has also given up 6 earned runs twice against poor offenses.
Free MLB Pick: Reds ML
The spotlight will be on Cincinnati on Sunday night, and I look for the Reds to play well. Cincinnati hits left-handers pretty well, and they have the much better bullpen.
