2013 NCAA Football BCS Futures Odds Update
USC, LSU, and Alabama among the favorites to win this season’s BCS title
It was not long after Alabama had thumped LSU 21-0 in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game that Bovada released its futures odds for this season’s national title game that will be held in early January of next year. Since then, there has been some minor movement up and down the board due some action from the betting public as well as some offseason developments with a few of the teams on the list.
The following is a BCS futures odds update which takes a look at a few teams that have remained rock-solid favorites as well as some whose stock is rising or falling according to Bovada’s current numbers.
Tried and True Favorites
Despite the loss in the title game, LSU was immediately opened as the odds-on-favorite to win this season’s championship at 4/1. The Tigers have slipped to 5/1 and are now the second-favorite to win it all, but regardless they should open the regular season somewhere near the very top of the preseason polls and stay there until they get well into the meat of their SEC schedule.
Last season’s national champion lost quite a bit of talent from that 12-1 squad, but with a whole new crop of young studs waiting patiently to take their place, Alabama opened as a 5/1 second favorite in January and is now the third-favorite at 11/2. Quarterback and Heisman hopeful A J McCarron is poised to lead the Tide’s passing game while Eddie Lacy will try and make everyone forget about running back Trent Richardson.
Stock is Rising
A two-year hiatus from postseason play had to be hard to handle for the USC faithful, but their patience may be rewarded if the Trojans can live up to all the preseason hype. They opened as third-favorites at 7/1 when the odds were first released but are now the new odds-on-favorites at 3/1 to win it all. Behind Heisman front-runner Matt Barkley, who is doing is best Andrew Luck impersonation by sticking around his senior year to try and quarterback his team to a championship, USC should have an explosive offense to go along with a defense that has been stockpiling talent over the past two years for this season’s coming out party.
Oregon figures to be USC’s only real challenge to winning the PAC-12 and a trip to the BCS title game could hinge on the outcome of a Nov.3 showdown between the two in Southern California. These two teams could very well meet again in the conference title game so the Ducks may have to actually beat the Trojans twice to have a shot at winning a national title. None the less, their stock is on the rise after opening at 12/1 and settling in at 10/1 right now.
Stock is Falling
Notre Dame may have one of the most popular football programs in the country but it has not seriously competed for a national championship for quite some time now. The Fighting Irish opened at 18/1 to end-up on top this season, but with little value in that number, the betting public has helped inflate the current odds to 25/1. This is a much more realistic number for a team that could make some noise along the way especially with games against Oklahoma, Michigan, and USC, but there is no way Notre Dame comes out of its gauntlet of a schedule with less than two or three losses.
A team whose stock has fell a bit, but does offer some solid value is Florida State. It has been a slow and steady climb for the Seminoles to get back on the top of the heap in college football, but with easily their most talented team in recent memory playing a watered-down ACC schedule; they are in prime position to run the table. Florida State opened at 12/1 and slipped to 14/1, which is the perfect direction to be moving in if you are searching for a quality team with longer odds.
