The start of the 2012/2013 men’s college basketball season is still over four months away, but it is never too early to start handicapping a couple of the top contenders’ chances to win the next national title. The following is closer look at a few of the teams that fit the bill along with their current odds to win next season’s NCAA Tournament as provided by BetDSI

Indiana Hoosiers 7/1
Indiana has always had a top-notch men’s basketball program, but it worked its way back near the top of the nation last season with a 27-9 record overall that included a victory over Kentucky in the regular season. Much of the talent from that team is expected to be back to make another run at a title including Cody Zeller, who led the team with 15.5 points and 6.4 rebounds a game. The Hoosiers should also have Christian Watford in the starting lineup. He was second on the team in both of those categories with 12.0 point and 5.9 rebounds a game.
Kentucky Wildcats 15/2
The defending champions, as expected, loss it’s starting five from last season mainly to the NBA, but that has come to be expected from a program that is known for churning-out one-year wonders that use the Wildcats as a brief stop-over before heading to the professional ranks. Fortunately, head coach John Calipari has the uncanny knack of recruiting the right mix of players that should once again have this team at or near the top of the rankings in 2012/2013.
Louisville did not start last season as one of the favorites to win a national title and actually finished the regular season as the just the seventh-seed in the Big East. A magical run all the way to the Final Four, where they lost to their bitter in-start rival Kentucky, has more than a few basketball experts climbing on the Cardinals’ bandwagon for a run all the way to a national title this upcoming season. It also helps that Louisville is expected to have a quite a few key components of last season’s 30-10 squad back including Peyton Siva and Russ Smith.
This is another team that lost a good chunk of its starting five from last season’s 32-6 campaign, most notably Harrison Barnes and Tyler Zeller, but coach Roy Williams leads another recruiting machine that continues reload by adding some of the top players in the country to the roster one season after the next. The question is will he be able to add enough pieces to carry the Tar Heels all the way to a national title? Despite having the most talent in recent memory, North Carolina could not get by Kansas in the Elite Eight in last season’s NCAA Tournament.
UCLA Bruins 15/1
It has been a few years since the UCLA Bruins have been considered one of the top-five favorites to win a national title, but the Oddsmakers are obviously high on the Bruins’ chances to seriously compete for one next season. UCLA finished last season 19-14 overall and 11-7 in conference play to very little fanfare. The primary reason for such lofty expectations is a solid recruiting class that contains players such as Shabazz Muhammad and Kyle Anderson, who were both two of the most sought after players in the nation. These two additions along with a few other top recruits has everyone abuzz that UCLA is ready for a return to glory in 2012/2013.
