Yankees and Red Sox Rivalry Renewed this Weekend at Fenway
MLB Weekend Series Preview- New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox
One of the best rivalries in baseball renews itself this weekend when the New York Yankees head into Fenway Park on Friday night for the first of a four-game showdown against the Boston Red Sox that also includes a Saturday double-header. These two have only met twice this season with the Yankees coming out on top in both games.
New York is coming off a red-hot June in which a 20-7 run has vaulted it to the top of the AL East. The Yankees have cooled off a bit in July with a 2-2 record in their last four games, but at 49-32 overall, they have a five-game lead over Baltimore in the division.
Boston continues to try and claw its way back into the AL East race after a poor start to the season, but is currently 7.5 games in back of the Yankees after dropping three straight games to Oakland earlier this week. The Red Sox are now 42-40 on the year.
Friday, July 6
Hiroki Kuroda vs. Josh Beckett
Kuroda is 8-7 in 16 previous starts but comes into this contest with an overall ERA of 3.17. The right-hander is coming off one of his best outings of the year after holding Chicago scoreless in seven innings. In the month of June he went 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA.
Beckett missed some time in the rotation due to a sore shoulder but returned last Saturday and held Seattle to just two earned runs on four hits in six innings of work. He is now 4-7 overall with a 4.06 ERA. The right-hander has a career-ERA of 5.36 against New York, but a 14-7 record.
Saturday, July 7
Phil Hughes vs. Franklin Morales
Hughes is 9-6 with a 4.29 ERA in 16 starts this season. The right-hander has given-up a total of just two earned runs in his last two outings after giving-up seven in his previous two. Lifetime against the Red Sox he is 2-5 with an ERA of 6.65.
Morales moved into the starting rotation earlier this season and has been rock-solid in his first three starts with a 1-0 record and 2.00 ERA. Overall on the year the left-hander is 1-1 with a 2.51 ERA and has not given-up more than two earned runs in his last 10 games.
Freddy Garcia vs. Alex Doubront
Garcia gets the call for the back-end of this double header and looked sharp in his return to the starting rotation this past Monday. He held Tampa Bay to just two earned runs on five hits but failed to get the decision. Overall, the right-hander is 2-2 with a 5.94 ERA.
Doubront has only gone a full seven innings once in 16 starts this season, but is still 8-4 on the year with a 4.42 ERA. The left-hander has given-up 18 earned runs in his last five starts and only lasted 4 1/3 innings his last time out.
Sunday, July 8
Ivan Nova vs. Jon Lester
Nova gave-up six runs on seven hits in a loss the Tampa Bay this past Tuesday, but has still been one of the bright spots in the Yankees’ starting rotation. The right-hander is 9-3 in 16 previous starts with a 4.05 ERA. Prior to Tuesday’s loss, Nova was 5-0 in his last seven starts. He is 1-2 against Boston with a 5.70 ERA.
Lester is 5-5 on the year with an ERA of 4.33. He held Oakland to just one run on four hits this last Tuesday while posting nine strikeouts. The left-hander has given-up three or less earned runs in five of his last six starts. He is 8-3 against the Yankees with a 4.15 ERA.
The Yankees are 21-6 in their last 27 games following a win and 21-8 in their last 29 games against a team with a winning record. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of their last nine games against the AL East.
The Red Sox are 6-2 in their last eight games following a loss but just 10-21 in their last 31 home games against a right-handed starter. The total has stayed ‘under’ in 14 of their last 17 games following a loss.
Head-to-head, New York has won five of the last six meetings and is 4-1 in its last five games in Boston. The total has gone ‘over’ in 16 of the last 23 games at Fenway Park
