San Francisco ran its current winning streak to five games with a 9-4 victory over Atlanta on Wednesday as a 108 road underdog. This followed a 9-0 shutout of the Braves as a 142 road dog in Game 1 of that series to run its record to 51-40 heading into Thursday’s series finale. The Giants currently have a three-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West and they are now 22-24 overall on the road this year.
While San Francisco has gotten some decent run support during this recent winning streak, it continues to be its pitching that is getting the job done. The Giants have given-up a total of nine runs in their last five games and are now ranked fourth in the NL with a team ERA of 3.49. Tim Lincecum is slated to get the start on Friday night. This season has been a disaster for the former Cy Young winner, but he is showing signs of returning to his old form. Overall, the right-hander is 3-10 with a 5.93 ERA. He is 4-2 against the Phillies with an ERA of 3.04.
Philadelphia has also shown some signs of returning to its old form with a 4-1 record in its last five games, but it may be a case of too little, too late with an overall record of 41-52. The Phillies are mired in last place in the NL East and a full 11 games out of a wildcard spot in the playoffs. They have been especially bad at home this season with a record of 17-27.
Ryan Howard and Chase Utley have finally returned from extended stays on the DL to provide a boost to the lineup and Roy Halladay is back in the starting rotation so Philadelphia is starting to resemble the team that has dominated the NL East the past few seasons. The Phillies will go with Lance Worley as their starter for this game. The right-hander is 5-5 with a 3.47 ERA in 15 starts this season and has given-up three or less earned runs in nine of his last 10 starts. He is 2-0 against the Giants with a 2.25 ERA.
This is shaping-up as a pitching duel if Lincecum gets off to a strong start, so the ‘under’ may be a solid play. The Phillies are 8-2 in Worley’s last 10 starts against the NL West so stick with this trend to continue with a win on Friday night to gain the early edge in this three-game weekend set. Philadelphia 3 San Francisco 2
