Tigers and Blue Jays kick-off a three-game set at the Rogers Centre
Detroit’s 5-3 victory over Cleveland this past Wednesday night as a 133 road favorite was its eighth win in its last 10 games. It heads into Thursday’s series finale against the Indians with an overall record of 53-45 and is currently tied with Chicago atop the AL Central. The Tigers are now 5-2 in their last seven games on the road and just over .500 at 25-24 on the road overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of their last six games.
Ever since a 13-0 loss to the Angels on July 17, Detroit’s bats have gotten the job done with a total of 36 runs in its last seven games. Its pitching has remained fairly solid all season long with a 3.93 team ERA. Rick Porcello is slated to get the start for the Tigers this Friday night. The right-hander is 7-5 in 19 previous outings with an ERA of 4.40. His last time out, he held the White Sox to one run on five hits in over eight innings of work. Porcello is 2-2 lifetime against the Blue Jays with a 3.75 ERA.
Toronto will try and avoid a sweep at the hands of Oakland in Thursday afternoon’s series finale after getting outscored 23-2 in the first two games. The back-to-back losses have dropped the Blue Jays under .500 to 48-49 on the year. They are 25-22 at home this season and the total has gone 5-2-2 in their last nine games.
It is hard to know what to expect from this team after Toronto scored 28 runs in its last three victories sandwiched around five losses in which it only managed to produce a total of six runs. The Blue Jays will send Carlos Villanueva to mound in this one. He joined the rotation in late June and has come through with three quality outings in his four starts. The right-hander is 5-0 on the year with an overall ERA of 2.86.
Prediction
Both pitchers come into this matchup in solid form and should be able to keep the opposing lineups in check for at least the first six or seven innings, but look for Detroit’s bats to prevail in a close, low-scoring battle. Detroit 4 Toronto 3
