Game Overview
Not only did the Giants win Super Bowl XLVI last season, they beat their city rivals 29-14 in the regular season as three-point home favorites and 17-3 in the preseason as three-point favorites at home as well. This time around they will be the visitors at MetLife Stadium for Saturday night’s preseason contest. Last week, New York kicked-off its title defense with a 32-31 loss to Jacksonville as a 2.5-point road underdog in Week 1 of the preseason. The total went ‘over’ the 34.5-point line.
Eli Manning saw limited action against the Jaguars, but should get a chance to play most of the first half against the Jets. The Giants looked sharp in the first half of last week’s game and opened-up a 24-14 lead at the end of two quarters. However, head coach Tom Coughlin was still upset with the overall effort in light of some turnovers and miscues on special teams. Given his postgame assessment of the team, you can expect a much better effort on Saturday night.
The Jets’ offense sputtered in a 17-6 loss to Cincinnati as one-point road underdogs in their first preseason game last Thursday night. The total stayed ‘under’ the 34-point line. Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez went 4-for-6 for 21 yards in limited action and his back-up Tim Tebow completed just 50 percent of his throws for 27 yards and was picked-off once.
How much of New York’s Wildcat package will be revealed in this game remains to be scene, but do not be surprised if head coach Rex Ryan instills a few gadget plays into the game plan to try and catch the Giants sleeping at the wheel. While the outcome of this game means absolutely nothing in terms of the regular season, it has to be killing Ryan that his team is playing second fiddle to the Jets’ co-tenants at MetLife Stadium.
Prediction
The Giants want to get through this game as healthy as possible considering that the team’s list of walking wounded has too many names on it already. They have clearly proven that they are the top dogs in the Big Apple, so look for the Jets to pick up the scraps with a win on Saturday night. NY Jets 23 NY Giants 21
