NFL Preseason Pick – Week 3

Game Overview

The betting public views Carolina as a dark-horse contender in the NFC South title race this season primarily because of quarterback Cam Newton. He is coming off a spectacular rookie campaign but whether or not he can avoid a sophomore slump remains to be seen. In limited action in the preseason Newton has completed 70 percent of his throws for 136 yards and one touchdown. He should get an extended chance to show he is ready to pick up where he left off in this game against the Jets.

So far the Panthers have had mixed results in the preseason with a 26-13 loss to Houston in Week 1 as three-point home favorites. They followed this up with a 23-17 victory over Miami as three-point home favorites this past Saturday. The total went ‘over’ in both games. The most important aspect of both these games is the fact that Carolina as not sustained any significant injuries in either one.

It has been a less than spectacular start for New York this preseason with a 17-6 loss to Cincinnati as a one-point road underdog in its first game and an ugly 26-3 rout at the hands of the Giants last Saturday night as a one-point home favorite. It is no wonder that both games stayed ‘under’ the total considering that the Jets have yet to find the end zone.

Much has been made about the competition between Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow in New York’s training camp, but neither quarterback has looked worthy of the starting role. Overall, the Jets are ranked dead-last this preseason in points, passing yards, and total yards per game. Sunday night’s game now becomes a crucial test to try and turn things around.

Prediction:

It would be hard for the Jets’ offense to play any worse than it has so you would have to think it will put some points on the board against the Panthers. Unfortunately for Jets’ fans it will not be enough as Carolina comes out on top on Sunday night. Carolina 20 New York 16
