SEC Football Week 3 Handicapping Guide
SEC Football Week 3 Handicapping Guide
The SEC suffered its first casualty in the Top 25 with Arkansas dropping like a rock after a stunning loss to Louisiana-Monroe as a 30-point favorite. Tennessee jumped up to No.23 to take the Razorbacks’ place. The conference currently has six teams ranked in the AP’s latest poll. The following is a look at a couple of the top football matchups for Week 3 in the SEC along with betting lines as provided by 5Dimes.
Saturday, Sept. 15
The No.1 team in the nation has pounded its way to a 2-0 straight-up start (1-1 against the spread) by outscoring Michigan and Western Kentucky by a combined score of 76-14. While the Tide easily covered as 14-point neutral-site favorites against the Wolverines, they could not cover the 38-point spread in last week’s 35-0 victory at home.
Saturday’s 34-31 overtime loss to Louisiana-Monroe proved to be devastating all the way around. Not only Arkansas it out of the BCS title picture, it might be without its biggest weapon for this game with quarterback Tyler Wilson listed as questionable with a head injury. This is the reason that line for this game is currently OFF. Wilson’s availability should be determined later in the week.
Alabama is 5-1 ATS in its last six road games and 7-2 ATS in its last nine conference games. The total has stayed UNDER in four of its last five games against the SEC. The Razorbacks are 20-8-1 ATS in their last 29 home games against a team with a winning record on the road. The total has gone OVER in their last five conference games. The Tide have won the last five meetings SU and are 3-2 ATS. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six meetings.
No.18 Florida Gators vs. No.23 Tennessee Volunteers (-2.5)
The Gators did not look overly impressive in their 27-14 win over Bowling Green as 28-point home favorites on opening day, but they bounced back with a solid 20-17 victory over Texas A&M one-point road favorites this weekend. The total stayed UNDER in both games.
Tennessee’s defense has given-up just 33 points so far while its offense has rolled-up 86 points in its 2-0 SU start. This is a far cry from a defense that gave-up 30 or more points four times last season including a 33-23 loss to Florida as a 10-point underdog of the road.
Florida is 2-9 ATS in its last 11 games and 1-6 ATS in its last seven games against the SEC. The total has stayed UNDER in its last five games on the road. Tennessee is 1-6-1 ATS in its last seven conference games and the total has stayed UNDER in four of its last six home games. The Gators are 4-1-1 ATS in the last six games in Tennessee and 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings overall. The total has gone OVER in three of the last five meetings
The Blazers opened the season with a 39-29 loss to Troy as 6.5-point home underdogs, but come into this matchup well rested after taking last weekend off. The total went OVER the 63.5-point line in their only game this season.
South Carolina snuck by Vanderbilt 17-13 in its season and SEC opener as a 6.5-point favorite on the road. It responded to this close call by pummeling East Carolina 48-10 last Saturday as a 21-point home favorite. The total went OVER the 50.5-point line after staying UNDER against the Commodores.
UAB is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games against the SEC and 6-1 ATS in its last seven games following s SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER in 11 of its last 13 games against this conference. The Gamecocks are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 non-conference games and the total has stayed UNDER in nine of their last 13 games overall. The last time these two teams met was in 2008 with the Gamecocks coming away with a 26-13 win as 26-point favorites at home.
