NCAA Football – Week 3
What could be a relatively ugly game kicks off on Friday night for NCAA football betting aficionados, as the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels play host to the Washington State Cougars.
The Cougs just haven’t gotten off to a good start to their season as of yet. They were beaten and beaten badly by the BYU Cougars on the first day of the season, and they turned around the next week and were nearly had by the FCS’ Eastern Washington Eagles. The offense has just 30 points to show for its first two games, and Head Coach Mike Leach came back to his alma mater to average that per half in games against teams like EWU. Up in the air is the status of QB Jeff Tuel. He suffered a knee injury last week against the Eagles and was briefly replaced by QB Connor Halliday, who would be the man to presumably start if Tuel doesn’t. Halliday has completed just 5-of-11 passing for 76 yards this year, though he did play well in relief in his freshman year when he threw for 960 yards and nine TDs against four picks in limited action.
Wazzu was nearly embarrassed by an FCS team. UNLV was embarrassed. The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, who aren’t even amongst the most talented second division collegiate teams in the nation as Eastern Washington is, came to Sam Boyd Stadium last week and knocked off the Rebels by a field goal in an ugly, defensive showdown. We’re still seeking answers for this team offensively, as 351.5 yards and 20.5 points per game just aren’t going to cut it. RB Tim Cornett seems to be about the only productive member of the offense, as he has 268 yards on the ground and a total of three TDs on the campaign. QB Nick Sherry is a gigantic disaster, though. He has thrown for just 355 yards and one TD versus three picks, and he has completed just 32-of-64 of his passes against two bad foes. The Rebels might not win a game this year if they don’t win this one, and that’s why Head Coach Bobby Hauck is in a whole heck of a lot of trouble after three years and now two games with just four wins for the program.
If Tuel doesn’t play, we are really going to be at a loss for where the points are coming from in this game. Yes, the Washington State offense is going to put some points on the board, just due to the high octane nature of the scheme. Still, this is a really tough one to handicap from the start, and it is going to be a game that few are riveted over at their televisions. We just hope for a good game, but we doubt that we are going to be able to see it. Washington State 18 – UNLV 14
