NFC Top Three Matchups- Week 2 Handicapping Report
NFC Top Three Matchups- Week 2
The 2012 NFL regular season is just one week old and we have already had our fair share of surprises. Who knows what might be in-store for Week 2. The following is a handicapping guide for the top three games within the NFC this Sunday with lines provided by 5Dimes.
Sunday, Sept. 16
New Orleans Saints (-6.5) vs. Carolina Panthers Total Line: 51
It is hard to say what impact the absence of head coach Sean Peyton (who is currently serving a year suspension by the NFL) may have had on this past Sunday’s 40-32 loss to Washington as a 8.5-point home favorite, but suffice to say a Saints’ loss this week could be devastating. Give credit to Drew Brees for never giving up, but his team was outplayed in every phase of the game.
Carolina needs to quickly recover as well after dropping a 16-10 decision to Tampa Bay as a one-point favorite on the road. Cam Newton suddenly looked very average at quarterback and the Panthers had no running game to speak of. Perhaps the return of running back Jonathan Stewart will give it s boost this week.
The Saints have won five of the last six meetings straight-up and are 8-4 SU in their last 12 trips to Carolina. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of the last nine games there and in 11 of the last 15 meetings overall.
Dallas Cowboys (-5) vs. Seattle Seahawks Total Line: 42
The well-rested Cowboys should be ready to get back to work after their impressive 24-17 victory over New York last Wednesday night as 3.5-point road underdogs. The total stayed UNDER the 45.5-point line. Tony Romo completed 22-of-29 attempts for 307 yards and three touchdowns to help secure the win.
Seattle lost a tight one to Arizona in its season opener with a 20-16 setback as a 2.5-point road favorite. The Seahawks went with rookie quarterback Russell Wilson as their starter, but he struggled with a completion percentage of just 52.9 percent for 153 yards. They cannot afford a 0-2 start if they are to have any shot at keeping San Francisco within their sights in the NFC West.
The Cowboys are 2-4 ATS in their last six games on the road and 2-4 SU in their last six games overall. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last seven games. Dallas is 4-2 SU in its last six games against Seattle and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.
Detroit Lions vs. San Francisco 49ers (-7) Total Line: 46
Detroit was able to grind-out a much needed 27-23 victory over St. Louis in its opener, but it hardly looked like a potential playoff team as a nine-point favorite at home. The total went OVER the 45.5-point line. Matthew Stafford put the ball up 48 times and completed 32 passes for 355 yards, but he was also picked-off three times in this game. The Lions ended the day with 429 yards of total offense but they had just 83 yards on the ground.
San Francisco has to be thrilled to get out of Green Bay with a win after beating the Packers 30-22 as a six-point underdog in its season opener. The total went OVER the 46.5-point line. Aaron Rodgers had a chance to try and tie this game at the end, but a 49ers interception sealed the win. What was really impressive about San Francisco was its ability to run the ball right down Green Bay’s throat with 186 yards on the ground.
The Lions have lost their last five games against the 49ers SU including last season’s 25-19 loss as five-point home favorites in a game that almost incited a fist-fight between each team’s head coach. Detroit is also 1-5-2 ATS in its last eight trips to San Francisco with the total staying UNDER in eight of the last nine meetings there.
