NCAA Football – Week 5

Big Ten foes that very well could be playing in the conference title game this year will meet for the second time ever and the first in Lincoln on Saturday night, where the Nebraska Cornhuskers will take on the Wisconsin Badgers.

The truth of the matter is that the season starts right now for the Badgers. All that we learned in the first month of the year about Wisky is that it just isn’t all that great. QB Danny O’Brien is definitely nowhere near as good as QB Russell Wilson was, and the offensive line just doesn’t seem to be opening up the same sort of holes that it was last year for RB Montee Ball. Don’t get us wrong; Ball is still a fantastic back, and by the end of the year, he very well could be back in New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation. Ball suffered a minor head injury last week against the UTEP Miners, and he left the game in the first half, but he is expecting to be ready to go for this one against the Huskers, a team that he ran wild against last year when he came up with 151 yards and four scores.

While the pressure really isn’t there at this point on Wisconsin, this is really a game that Nebraska has to win if it thinks that it is going to end up having a shot at the Rose Bowl this year. QB Taylor Martinez was awful last season in Camp Randall, and he is going to hope to make amends for that this time around. He’s off to a good start to the season, knowing that he is leading the nation’s ninth ranked offense. Martinez has thrown for 878 yards and averaged 9.5 yards per pass attempt to go with his nine scores and just one pick, and he has 191 yards and two TDs on the ground. RB Rex Burkhead made his season debut last week, rushing for 187 yards and three TDs before going back to the bench against the Idaho State Bengals, but he’ll have a lot more than 11 carries in this one. Even if he doesn’t, RB Ameer Abdullah and RB Imani Cross have both had great years as well, as they are both averaging over six yards per carry for Big Red.

Prediction:

There is a lot of talk about revenge in this game, but there is a point that we have to be realistic. The Wisconsin team was once ranked in the Top 10 in the country this year. Though that isn’t justified, we still do believe, in spite of all of the offensive struggles, that this is one of the best 25 teams in the land. There’s no way that Nebraska should be favored by any Top 25 team by double digits. We think that the Huskers will win, but they won’t cover. Nebraska 28 – Wisconsin 20
