The last series of the year for MLB betting fans kicks off in the Bronx on Monday night, where the Boston Red Sox will hope to make the playoffs a living hell for the New York Yankees.
The Red Sox have long since been out of the discussion for the second season, and this might be the last time that we have to see Manager Bobby Valentine ruining the Nation. Boston is seemingly just trying to avoid finishing with the worst record in the American League or in the AL East. The team already has 90 losses, and only the Cleveland Indians (67-92) and the Minnesota Twins (66-93) have been worse. We give it up this year for Clay Buchholz, the man that will be making his final appearance of the campaign on Monday. Buchholz is 11-7 with a 4.22 ERA this year, and if not for a lack of help, he really could have won perhaps 17 or 18 games. The righty didn’t have his best stuff against the Tampa Bay Rays back on September 25th, allowing eight hits and five runs, four of which were earned in a loss. In fairness though, five nights before that, he fanned four and allowed just four hits in seven scoreless innings against this same Tampa Bay outfit, and he certainly outpitched David Price, who might be the Cy Young Award winner this year.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are brutally trying to get past the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East once again. The latter has the tougher task going against the Tampa Bay Rays from Monday through Wednesday, but if the two teams finish on level terms, there is going to have to be a tiebreaker game played on Thursday, which would do nothing to help either team’s cause of ultimately winning the World Series. At least the Bronx Bombers know that they are guaranteed to make it to at least Friday now, which is why we now know that this is the last time we will see CC Sabathia on the mound until Friday. And don’t necessarily expect that much out of Sabathia. He has thrown 192 innings already this year in just 27 starts, and he has thrown eight frames in back to back outings. The need just isn’t there for New York to burn him, knowing that there will be bigger and better later in the week, but in the end, it is still a game that truly has to be won. Sabathia was brought here to the Bronx to help beat the Red Sox, but he is just 7-9 with a 4.35 ERA in 21 career games against them.
The Red Sox finished playing baseball two month ago, and they are a shockingly horrendous 5-22 in their last 27 games played against teams with winning records. There’s just no reason to think that they can win this game even one out of three times. New York 5 – Boston 3
