NCAA Football – Week 6
It has been quite some time since the Miami Hurricanes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have met regularly. Now that they are going to be sharing the ACC banner down the road, that might not be the case for long, and the first installment of this newly recreated rivalry will take place at Soldier Field on Saturday night on the college football Week 6 odds.
Miami has picked up a lot of steam this week as a legitimate Top 25, and many are taking the hefty amount of points. We must admit that what we have seen from “The U” has been interesting, to say the least. QB Stephen Morris all of a sudden looks like one of the best quarterbacks that the country has to offer, and he has thrown for 1,635 yards and nine TDs, including last week’s record setting day when he threw for 566 yards, the most in the history of the ACC. Morris has over 1,000 of his yards in the last two weeks, both games on which ended in big wins in the ACC. WR Phillip Dorsett is tearing things up on the field, as he has 28 receptions, 464 yards, and three trips to the end zone this year, while WR Rashawn Scott has 326 yards on just 17 catches with two scores. The defense is problematic though, and that could come back to bite the Canes in the backside in this one, knowing that the unit ranks 100 or worse in virtually every major defensive category.
Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish are thinking about a National Championship at this point. They are 4-0, and they have three wins over Big Ten teams, the two most recent of which – the Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines – had real aspirations of competing for the national title once upon a time themselves. There is still a brutally tough schedule ahead, but the Golden Domers might be up to the challenge, especially if they can get past this one. It’s anyone’s guess as to how all of these quarterbacks are going to be used, as we really aren’t all that impressed with any of the three that the Irish might deploy. However, what we are definitely impressed with is the defense. This unit hasn’t allowed a touchdown in over eight quarters of play, and no one has figured out how to move the ball consistently against it. LB Manti Te’o is becoming a legit Heisman Trophy candidate for the simple fact that he is just all over the field and is the key cog for what might be the best defense in America.
Prediction:
We just don’t buy that Morris can keep this up. If he can’t, the Hurricanes are in a lot of trouble on Saturday. They’ll be able to hang for a bit, but once the Notre Dame defense revs it up, “The U” is going to be in a heck of a lot of trouble. Notre Dame 34 – Miami 13
