West Virginia is coming off a game where they allowed 63 points and still won. Texas allowed 36 points in Stillwater last week, but they edged out Oklahoma State 41-36. Will either of the defenses show up for this one? It’s a battle of two teams who look like serious contenders in the highly competitive Big 12 Conference.

Game Overview:

The West Virginia Mountaineers arguably have the most high-powered offense in the nation this year. Geno Smith has piled up some ridiculous numbers this season. Smith has thrown 20 touchdowns and has yet to throw an interception all season. Smith has completed 83.4 percent of his passes on the year. Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin might be the best one-two punch on the outside in the nation. Through four games, Bailey has ten touchdowns and Austin already has 48 receptions. West Virginia is first in the nation in passing offense. The Mountaineers are averaging 441.5 yards per game through the air. Running back Shawne Alston is questionable for this game with a thigh injury.

The offense has been amazing, but the West Virginia defense hasn’t been good. Opponents have racked up 352.8 yards per game through the air against the Mountaineers. The defense has been able to create some key turnovers, which has helped them come into this game unbeaten. They’ll be tested in a big way by a resurgent Texas offense in this one. Can West Virginia’s defense make big plays on the road?

Coming into the season, there was a big concern at Texas over the starting quarterback position. David Ash has stepped up in a huge way earlier this year. Ash already has ten touchdowns and just one interception this year. Last season, he threw four touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Longhorns running game is the biggest strength of the team. Joe Bergeron, Malcolm Brown, and Johnathan Gray have all been sensational this season. Texas is averaging 228 rushing yards per game. The Longhorns offense is averaging 47.2 points per game so far this season.

Texas seems to have slipped a little bit defensively this year, but they still have some very talented players on this side of the ball. The defensive line is the strength of the defense. Jackson Jeffcoat and Alex Okafor are two terrific defensive ends. The Longhorns can get pressure on the opposing quarterback without having to send a big blitz because of their defensive ends. Manny Diaz is one of the best new minds in college football, and his stock as a defensive coordinator is extremely high right now. Texas is allowing 21 points per game this year.
