NCAA Basketball Pick – November 14th
A pair of teams that got off to a 1-0 starts to their campaign are going to meet at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville for a Wednesday night tussle on the college basketball odds, as the Florida Gators take on the Wisconsin Badgers.
The Badgers are always going to be playing their style of defense no matter who the foe is, and this won’t be an exception. They got off to a great start on that side of the court when they embarrassed the Southeastern Louisiana State Lions 87-47 on Sunday. It’s a short turnaround time to get to Gainesville for the Badgers, but we still know that this is going to be a team that comes out and plays hard for the full 40 minutes on both sides of the court. This is definitely an experienced team, and it is a deep one as well. Jared Berggren put up 19 points and eight boards in his first game of the year, while Ben Brust had a fantastic all around effort. He scored 14 points, brought in 11 boards, had three assists and two steals, not to mention the fact that he was virtually perfect from the field. Three different players had at least eight rebounds, but of course, this time around, there are some more talented players that will be on the other side of the court.
Florida is an interesting team to follow this year. The club was solid at the end of last year, and a decent run in the NCAA Tournament to the Sweet 16 was the end result. Still, there’s a real question, especially with Scott Wilbekin suspended for an indefinite amount of time, just how deep Head Coach Billy Donovan can afford to go into his bench for a game like this one. The team played well in the Carrier Classic in Jacksonville against the Georgetown Hoyas before the game was scrapped, especially defensively. Meanwhile, the team came out two nights later in the home opener and pummeled the Alabama State Hornets 84-35 behind the 22 points from veteran leader Kenny Boynton. Boynton was one of the four men that scored in double figures for the game. Get used to hearing that from this team, though. It really seems as though Boynton, Erik Murphy, Mike Rosario, and Patric Young are going to do all of the heavy lifting for this team this year.
Prediction:
The Badgers might be the better of these two teams, but the great equalizer is coming in the form of that trip to Gainesville. It’s the first long trip of the year for Wisconsin, and we just can’t back it. However, we can’t back the hosts either, as we think that there is a decent chance that they really struggle to find a groove offensively. The ultimate decision? This has to be one of the lowest scoring games on the docket on Wednesday night, and it definitely should be a struggle to get either team into the 60s. Florida 59 – Wisconsin 55
