NCAA Football – Week 12
SEC rivals from the Volunteer State are going to meet up in Nashville on Saturday night in a nationally televised college football betting showdown between the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Tennessee Volunteers.
This has been an atrocious year for the Volunteers, but it isn’t all their fault. They are clearly not as good as some of the other great teams in the SEC, and as a part of their schedule this year, they have had to play games against the likes of Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi State, and Georgia. The bottom line is that they have won the games that they were expected to win and have lost the games that they were expected to lose. The exception though, was probably the game that ultimately will seal the fate for Head Coach Derek Dooley, a 51-48 overtime loss to the Missouri Tigers last week in Knoxville. Now, the team needs to win both of its final two games just to make it to a bowl game. About the only bright spot on the campaign is the play of QB Tyler Bray. The junior has thrown for 1,302 yards and 13 TDs against one pick in the last three games, but his defense just isn’t helping him out any. The team has allowed a relatively stupid average of 45.5 points per game in the last six, in which the Volunteers have gone just 1-5 with the one win coming against the Troy Trojans.
To put Bray’s numbers in comparison with what the Vandy quarterbacks have done this year, QB Jordan Rodgers has just 1,945 passing yards and nine TDs with three picks in his 10 games this year. Those numbers for Bray before were just over the course of three games. Of course, the Commodores would much rather keep the ball on the ground with RB Zac Stacy than anything else, a methodology that has worked and worked well over the course of the this season. Head Coach James Franklin has the Dores back in a bowl game this year, and though it won’t be one of the most illustrious bowl games on the SEC docket, just getting there with the chance still existing to win eight or nine games is tremendous. The last time the Commodores won nine games in a season was back in 1915. The defense for Vandy has been out of this world this year. In spite of the fact that the schedule has been tough, the team has kept foes down to just 330.4 yards and 18.0 points per game.
Though we badly want to back the Commodores, we think that the safer play is the ‘under’. The Tennessee defense has been terrible, but this isn’t a Vandy team that is likely to take advantage of that fact to the tune of 30+ points all that often. Expect to see this be the very first ‘under’ game of the year for the Volunteers. Vanderbilt 27 – Tennessee 21
