NFL Upset of the Week 13: Chargers Beat Bengals

The San Diego Chargers are a mess. They are in a free fall and they are off one of the worst losses perhaps n team history. They allowed Ray Rice and the Baltimore Ravens to convert a 4th and 29 that ultimately led to an overtime loss and the end of Norv Turner as head coach in San Diego.

Now going into week 13 they go up against the Cincinnati Bengals who are fresh off a torching of the Oakland Raiders. So it may seem crazy that the NFL upset of the week for week 13 is the San Diego Chargers (+1) to beat the Bengals.

But let’s look at some facts. Despite the loss the Chargers defense was impressive for most of the game (outside of the 4th down play) and this sets up as a big letdown for the Bengals. The Bengals just defeated Carson Palmer and the Oakland Raiders. This game was important because it improved the draft pick the Bengals will acquire in the Palmer trade and at the same time they beat an old teammate that turned his back on the city.

Now the Bengals have a shot at the AFC North and a playoff spot, so it makes sense that they could look past this trip to the west coast to take on the hapless Bengals before battling in division. Meanwhile the Chargers are playing free with little to no expectations and hopes of erasing the embarrassing loss from a week ago.

The Bengals are 8-18 ATS in their last 26 games after allowing less than 250 total yards in their previous game and 3-11-2 ATS in their last 16 against the AFC. The Chargers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring less than 15 points in their previous game and will upset the Bengals this week as the upset of the week.
