NCAA Football – Week 14

After a slightly disappointing 5-2 start to the season, Oklahoma has won four straight to get to 9-2 on the year. The Sooners came from behind to beat Oklahoma State in the Bedlam rivalry last weekend. TCU upset Texas in a key rivalry game last week as well. The Horned Frogs are looking to end their first season in the Big 12 with an upset win at home.

Game Overview:

Oklahoma trailed 38-27 late in the third quarter against Oklahoma State last weekend, but the Sooners scored to tie it at 45 with four seconds remaining. They then won the game 51-48 in overtime on Brennan Clay’s 18 yard touchdown run. Two weeks ago, the Sooners won 50-49 in Morgantown against the Mountaineers. Landry Jones and the Sooners offense has really gotten going over the last few weeks. Oklahoma is passing for 349.3 yards per game, which is fifth best in the nation. Jones has 3,735 yards passing this season. The Sooners have scored at least 41 points in seven games this season.

Oklahoma’s defense has allowed a ton of points the last couple weeks, but this unit has been one of the best in the conference for most of the season. The secondary is very strong for Oklahoma. Javon Harris leads the way with five interceptions on the year. This defense has struggled against power running teams. The Sooners will need the front seven to pressure the quarterback this week. Overall, the Sooners are giving up 24.8 points per game this year.

TCU hasn’t had an easy season of transition, but the Horned Frogs are a very respectable 7-4 on the season. Casey Pachall was expected to be the leader of this team, but he is away from the program in a drug and alcohol rehab facility. Freshman Trevone Boykin was thrust into the starting quarterback job sooner than he expected. Boykin has done a pretty good job considering the circumstances. The Horned Frogs have three very capable runners, and Boykin is one of them. TCU has been a balanced offense this year, but they aren’t quite as spectacular as many offenses in this conference. The Horned Frogs average 30.5 points per game.

The TCU defense is definitely the strength of the team. This unit is ranked in the top ten in the nation in rushing defense. They held Texas’ impressive running game to just 86 yards on the ground last week. The secondary will be tested in a big way by the Oklahoma offense this week. If TCU isn’t able to get pressure on Landry Jones, it could be a long game for the Horned Frogs secondary.

The Big 12 title is on the line this weekend, and I expect both of these teams to come out ready to play. Oklahoma obviously has a little more to play for, but TCU is playing some inspired football of late. The defense that can hold the opponent multiple to field goal attempts should win this one. I think both of these defenses are better than most people believe. Look for the under to cash in.
