NCAA Basketball Pick – December 4th
The 2012 Jimmy V Classic heads to Madison Square Garden, where college basketball betting fans can sink their teeth into another great clash on the collegiate hardwood on Tuesday, as the Georgetown Hoyas take on the Texas Longhorns.
The Hoyas are up to No. 15 in America this week, and that’s thanks to the fact that they scored a huge win last week against the Tennessee Volunteers. The 37-36 victory wasn’t exactly a work of art, but wins are wins, especially against solid SEC teams. This is a team that has been playing stout defensive ball all year long, and if you take away that 82 points that the Indiana Hoosiers scored against them this year, the Hoyas are allowing just 54.0 points per game on the campaign. Offensively, the team has been solid, yet not spectacular. In spite of the fact that no one scored in double digits against Tennessee (on either side of the court), F Greg Whittington still leads four different Hoyas that are averaging double digits this year. Whittington, G Markel Starks, and F Otto Porter are all shooting at least 49% from the field as well, making this G-Town outfit one of the most efficient in the nation.
Texas has played solid ball this year as well though, and it won’t be an easy out here at MSG. The team is allowing just 55.7 points per game on the campaign, and that includes losing to the USC Trojans and the amazing defeat at the hands of Chaminade in Maui. Since coming back from the Big Island though, there have been nothing but one-sided romps in favor of the Longhorns, and that’s a great step in the right direction. Three straight teams have made 18 field goal attempts or less against this team. UT doesn’t have all that much in the way of scoring threats, as G Sheldon McClellan and G Julien Lewis are the top two scorers. They’re good for 29.0 points per game between them, but there isn’t another player on this team that has put up more than 8.7 points per game of the season. Of course, there are some high hopes for G Javan Felix, though he has to shoot the ball better than 31.7 percent from the field and 9.1 percent from long range to really make an impact on the club.
Prediction:
These two teams have remarkably similar numbers this year, but the Hoyas are tremendously efficient, while the Longhorns are just deficient in so many different categories. Don’t be shocked if this is another one of these ugly games in the 50s for the Hoyas, but they should still win by a sizeable margin. Georgetown 58 – Texas 50
