NBA – February 10th
The San Antonio Spurs are back on the road of the third game of the Rodeo Road Trip on the East Coast, and they’ll try to beat the NBA betting odds against the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday night.
San Antonio played a very uncharacteristic game on Friday against the Detroit Pistons, getting beaten 119-109. Head Coach Gregg Popovich isn’t going to be happy with the way that his defense played against a team that really doesn’t have all that much in the way of offense. It snapped a string of five straight games where San Antonio averaged allowing just 89.3 points per game. The man that’s on a roll right now is G Tony Parker. Parker put up 31 points and eight assists in both of his last two games, and he is now averaging 20.6 points and 7.6 assists per game, making him one of the top point guards that the NBA has to offer. Of course, Parker has had to continually pick up the slack for a team that hasn’t had F Tim Duncan or G Manu Ginobili on this road trip as of yet. Neither figures to play on Sunday night in Brooklyn, though that could change by the time the game tips off.
Brooklyn meanwhile, is also coming off of a baffling loss to the Washington Wizards. The Wiz have been playing better basketball of late, but to lose by 15 points and to put up just 74 isn’t going to cut it going into the All-Star Break. This is a stretch of three very tough games from here through the intermission of the season, as the Spurs, Indiana Pacers, and Denver Nuggets, all of which are NBA Finals contenders, are on deck. The Nets have alternated wins and losses from an SU perspective in their last seven games. However, they’re just 2-6 ATS in their last eight overall. Rumors of a F Kris Humphries for G Ben Gordon deal are swirling, and Humphries was used for just nine minutes against Washington as a result. This team could be ripped apart in a hurry if it isn’t careful, but it is still a very talented team that has the goods to beat any team in the league.
Prediction:
We’re not feeling all that great right now about the Nets. We think that they are going to lose at least two of these final three games before the break, if not all three. The club needs a shakeup, as it really feels like it is playing with two guards (Deron Williams and Joe Johnson) and a center (Brook Lopez) against full teams. The Spurs are a complete team, even without Duncan and Ginobili out there. San Antonio will put up a much better effort on Sunday night. San Antonio 104 – Brooklyn 89
