College Basketball Conference Report – SEC
Every week here at the Bang the Book we will look at some of the conferences in college basketball. The conference report will show the current state of affairs in that conference as March gets closer and closer. Taking a look at the conferences can lay out a blue print of the best teams to bet on when the Madness starts in March.
This week we will look at the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The SEC is hands down one of the best conferences in the country when it comes to college football, but they need to make up some ground in basketball.
The cream of the crop in this conference is easily the Florida Gators. With the exception of a loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks, the Gators have been destroying the competition and have 20-3 overall record with a 10-1 strong conference record.
The Kentucky Wildcats are currently in second place in the SEC, but after the injury to the left knee of freshman Nerlens Noel may put the future direction of this team in jeopardy. Noel led the nation in blocks so his defensive presence will be sorely missed.
This could leave the door open for the Alabama Crimson Tide (16-8, 8-3) or the Ole Miss Rebels (18-5, 7-3) to make a run at second place in the conference. The SEC has 11 out of the 14 teams in the conference that have reached double-digits in victories. This could leave the door open for the committee members to make some tough calls on what SEC teams will make it to the big dance come March.
South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and LSU have conference records under .500, so they may have a difficult time getting the nod unless they finish with some big victories. The SEC may be better in football than they are in basketball, but the gap is closing.
