The conference tournaments are on the horizon and the college basketball landscape is starting to take shape. Bang the Book Bracketology will take a look at current events in college basketball and examine how they shape the betting world when March Madness is concerned. This week the focus will be on road losses.

Although both sports have similar rankings, college basketball and college football are not alike. In college football a team cannot afford to have a loss during the regular season, but it is expected in the college basketball season. As Rivalry week winds down several upsets have played out, most recently in the Big East.

The No. 6 ranked Syracuse Orange lost to the University of Connecticut Huskies. Although the Huskies have had success in the past they are not as good of a team as Syracuse is this year. That didn’t stop the Huskies from beating Syracuse in front of their home fans. Since Syracuse will be moving to the Athletic Coast Conference (ACC) next year this could be the last meeting between these rivals for years to come. That made this game special, and the home team had the edge and pulled off the upset.

This is just one of the many upsets that have happened this week, as top-ranked Michigan also fell to Michigan State. In the big scheme of things these losses don’t matter. Home teams playing a top-ranked opponent will often elevate their game and give the best effort of the year considering that it is possibly the biggest game of the season. Referees also tend to be bias on home courts and all of this adds up to the upset.

The ranked teams are overall much better and when they play on a neutral court in the tournament the outcomes will be much different. Upsets are fun to watch but don’t buy into the hype come tournament time.
