College Basketball Conference Report – Big East

This is the best time to be a college basketball fan. The regular season is coming to a close and the teams are preparing for the conference tournaments. The tournament will reveal the best teams to advance to the NCAA tournament. This week the conference report will focus on one of the best conferences historically in college hoops, the Big East.

With the emergence of the Big Ten and realignment in college sports the Big East does not get the attention it is used to but they still have quality basketball teams that can make a run at a National Championship.

Currently the highest ranked team in the conference is the Syracuse Orange who is ranked No. 8 in the country. Syracuse is joined by five other teams in the conference that are ranked in the Top 25. Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Marquette, and Pittsburgh are all locks to make the NCAA Tournament unless they fall flat in conference tournaments. Even if they fail in the end of season tournament, they could still get a seed in the Big Dance.

Surprisingly the team with the best chance of making a big splash in the tournament may be one of the lower ranking squads. The Marquette Golden Eagles are ranked 17th in the country but they have the best conference record in the Big East at 10-3. Marquette head coach Buzz Williams has this team playing great basketball and with scoring from more than one source, like Vander Blue and Devante Gardner, the sky is the limit for this team.

The rest of the conference is loaded with bad teams that may struggle to reach a secondary tournament. Seton Hall, DePaul, and Rutgers will miss the tournament, but Cincinnati and Villanova are legitimate bubble teams. The college sports landscape may be changing but the Big East conference is still loaded with contenders.
